I know many of the people on this board are interested in learning/memory/spaced repetition. I myself just started using Anki as a result of Michael Nielsen's essay Augmenting Long-Term Memory.

Are you a professional go player?

If not why use flashcards?

Just follow the go activities you like and improve that way.

(I for one like reviewing my games.)

So far, I am not using Anki for Go, though I’ve considered it.

But I don’t get your question. Would you say the same thing about life and death problems?

Just a bit of small talk.

Yes, for myself I would say the same for L&D Problems.

But I enjoy a L&D app nonetheless, if there is some time available during my everyday routine.


I did not want to question the quality of your advice and I am sure it is good advice for many people. I just can not make myself to study hard with a flashcard software or L&D problem books

I have no problem to study hard by reviewing games (my own and pro) and using AI to analyze/learn shapes, because I enjoy these activities just as much as playing.

I’m also a fan of this strategy. If you haven’t seen it and you have an iOS device, EasyGo (http://www.easygo361.com) has a nice feature that lets you upload your own problems as sgf’s. For example, I’m still working through Cho Chikun’s Life and Death book by picking a related set of shapes (for example, the L groups) and uploading all of the permutations to EasyGo. Creating the sgf “problems” has also been a great way to work carefully through the material.

It also has a number of settings to calibrate the spaced repetition features, but I can’t say that I’ve found that too helpful.
