On this forum some people start fights in every single thread they are involved in.

Well, no level of experience, knowledge or skill can make up for that. It's just lame.

There, I said it.

It is more productive to say it privately to an admin. With details.

To admin JB:

Not necessarily.
Such posts may make such people get introspective and start thinking about the reasons they do what they do. It might be good to know if you are perceived as trouble maker so you can decide if this is the perception you wish to create. Provided you are not just a troll enjoying fights.

Behind the scenes, admin-private details are a different story. But even this is debatable.

You assume it is better for admin to deal with trouble rather than the forum to self-regulate. I would prefere for the forum to at least try to self-regulate and admins only step in as the last resort.

So - my hat off to the OP. Let his voice be heard.

I'm guessing that OP doesn't have much experience on internet discussion forums.

While I can to some extent agree with him, I must say that this is one of the most polite and "peaceful" forums I know.

It does get a depressing sometimes.

I think there are several things going on.

1)This forum isn't a high volume forum, which I think lends to people stoking the flames to try to get conversations going.
2)Some people on the forum have certain financial interests at stake the advertising and marketing can get ugly.
3)Gamer culture is gamer culture.

Sometimes fights are important. Yes, go is only a game... but it's also more than that. It's some people's main hobby; it's a significant monetary investment for some; it's a sizeable chunk of some people's life work. It's understandable, and perfectly normal, that disagreements sometimes get heated.

As billywoods said, yes, sometimes fights are important. We fight for what we think is right.
Fighting is also very natural -- remember that for 99.9999% of our species' existence,
we've had to fight daily just to survive (this is still true in many areas of the world today.)

Most Go players are male. Most probably competitive. (Highly) opinionated (whether right or wrong).
Put them all in one spot -- then zero fighting would be highly un-natural.

Fights are important, you are right. And I should know - I've been in my share of them.

But this is not what the OP implied. There is no community without differences. But the implication was that some people tend to be in it only/mostly for starting fights. This is not really natural, no matter how much testosterone is floating around. And when people like that keep indulging in excessive fighting or even going out of their way to create fights beyond what seems reasonable, then I think it is good to point it out. Chances are - this is not what they intend to do, and they might not even be aware of how they come across. From my own experience I can attest that it can be *very* helpful to have it pointed out - and then take a step back, re-evaluate, and decide anew if the issue is worth so much fuss.

Of course, there will always be people who fight for fun, and you cannot really help them much. However, they might be important as well, so carry on as if nothing happened and have fun.

Just an opinion.

I have no idea who Vlad is talking about, so either it's me, or the censor function is doing its job perfectly

:D of course it's not you... I would collect a huge rage if I would say publicly who I'm talking about because this person is very influential in western go, but, nevertheless, I don't think that every post can end up in fight if there's not something wrong with this guy.

The way I see it: go community is a small one and if we want to grow, it should be based on huge respect to other members, no matter what. Especially because it's go community. Go is a game of respect for your opponent, no matter how much stronger or weaker are you.

If I don't agree with you, there is much more respectfull ways to express that than to start a fight.

And I don't see that arguments that "this is internet, it's normal", "competitive behaviour" or something else are right in this case. No. On the contrary. This is go. On the surface it's calm, civilized. Explosions are subtle, fights are quiet, deaths are dignifield, life is noble.

Of course, this might be just my idealisation of go environment, but I like to think that it's a game of ladies and gentleman and not of inteligent barbarians.

I managed somehow to delete my previous post. Sorry. It's Tapatalk.

Regarding the thread, further on, I'll mind my own business and my own go. It's smarter and more productive.

Cheers.

This is passive-aggressive and usually tries to separate spectators into opposing camps.

If you have a problem with someone specific, please name that person and talk about your problem. This hush-hush-you-know-you-know-wink-wink approach doesn't help.

This forum has a bad habit of, if you have an issue with someone who's prolific, telling you that they're more important than you and you should shut up.

One time I was pointed to how I had much fewer likes than John F in the middle of a discussion. Here is an example where I thought someone was a little rude, and the reply from jts was that he could be as rude as he want given his contributions.

You have thin skin, dude.
If it was an admin who would point it out to you, I would understand your grief. But regular users say a lot of things... cowboy up already.
