I don't even know what to say, except, good luck, and hope things get better for you.

As for courage wolf, I think he has this to say.

You can out a hold on your credit report. Any checks will require a specific authorization from you. It will be a pain in the short run , especially if you are applying for credit. But it will go a step toward preventing ID theft.

How exactly does that work? Does it really only affect applying for new credit?

Item number two on this page is what I am referring to. I don't know all of the details but I do no it is one of the primary avenues of protection afforded holders of consumer credit. I also checked my paystubs. All but the final four digits are x'ed out. Maybe yours were the same?

First off, sorry to hear all this man. This sucks.

This is where life is starting to throw the below-the-belt punches, and it all just stacks up.

Like everybody else has said, keep holding strong. You will get through this.

Hopefully it should be. Mainly done for this exact reason. Company's don't want identify theft caused by this as it looks bad for them as well.

No such luck. That was the first thing I checked when I remembered they were in there. The whole number is on there. I'll be contacting the credit agencies I guess.

I checked on renter's insurance; it would be covered but it looks like the deductible would have been almost the cost of the bike new, so it wouldn't have helped much. Still, I'm going to finally break down and get it. I've procrastinated about it for years and it's really pretty cheap; there's no good excuse for not having it.

@Fwiffo:

Several months ago, when those of us at GD suffered a loss of one of our favorite websites, you and other programmers built up L19. If we had to pay someone to do it, we never could have afforded it. We greatly appreciate that. Now that you have suffered losses, it is our turn to return the favor.

A bunch of us have made donations to a paypal account. There is currently $404.05 in it. That may be enough to buy a another bike, and maybe a few rolls of tp. You can access the account using the email "5ab at-sign fifthavenuebooks period com", and a password which you will find in a PM.

Thank you,
Joaz and the guys at L19

PS: When you acccess the account, I recommend changing the email address. When you do, please post it here. Otherwise, late donations would end up in my account, not yours.

@everyone but fwiffo:

If you want to donate to fwiffo's new bike, please go to paypal and make payments to "5ab at-sign fifthavenuebooks period com", until such time that he posts a new email.

Um, that's not an ampersand; an ampersand is &. Just sayin'...

Please don't do this; I can't accept it. I hope I didn't give the impression that my financial situation is dire. I have a good, reliable job and a mostly frugal lifestyle. I mean, think of the money I've saved by riding a bike instead of owning a car.

I'd rather the money be saved as an emergency fund for the community. We may have a sufficient supply of enthusiastic programmers, but who knows if hosting is going to become an issue again.

It's not about your financial situation. It's just a spontaneous showing of support for someone we appreciate who can use a boost.

Well, I'm happy with fwiffo deciding the most appropriate place for it to go in the context of what it is being raised for :)

We didn't do it based on the assumption that you deperately needed it. We did it based on the observation that you had earned it.

I can't do that. The money was sent to me for one purpose and one purpose only. I can't decide to redirect it. If you want to divert it to an emergency fund, you have to accept it and then start the emergency fund yourself.

Well, I'm a bit overwhelmed. :oops: I know I find it a bit annoying when people are too old-fashioned and too proud to ask for help, or to accept it... So I guess I'll be bike shopping this week. I got a ride from a buddy yesterday, so I was already able to take care of the TP situation. :D

I promise to get back to getting more work done on the forum more once I get my feet (or wheels) back under me.

I'm glad you've accepted. But remember that you don't owe anyone anything, and no one expects you to work more on the forum or do anything else in exchange.

I've gotten enough to cover most of the cost of a bike, so I've closed the account; please don't send any more.

Thank you all again.

Aww man! Just three more days and I would have been able to help too. I guess I'll just save it for contributing to the forum if need be.
