igolocal

Post by tapir »

It struck me with surprise that the demise of igolocal didn't evoke any significant reaction by the go playing online community. Was the service provided not worthwile enough to merit at least some effort to be continued? The files must be around somewhere after all... In my opinion, it didn't turn out the big success first envisioned but I believe it helped some players find each other, spawn some clubs, put pressure on some established federations to update their club lists after years of neglect. Over all a very beneficial effect, which I would like to see continued.

Good question. I agree that while it probably disappointed its creator, it was a good idea and it would be better if it stayed up, even if its founder doesn't want to do that.

I miss Igolocal … just a few weeks after I had set up my info and that of the local weekly players’ meeting it went down :-(

<edit>

Perhaps they couldn’t pay for it anymore?

</edit>

Would it perhaps be possible to implement something like that here? Perhaps with Google Maps or some such? Probably lots of work, and I couldn’t do anything to help, so … plz don’t take this as a demand ;)

Hmm, CThomas hasn't been on L19 in more than a year. Does anyone know how to contact him on KGS or irl?

Long ago i contacted IgoLocal to try to use it with kaya. We still have that idea in mind: using geo location , users permission and some address scrambling, kaya could make its own igolocal, to find internet players in real life.

Part of our vision is to help and nurture independent endeavours, and Igolocal is one of those we can easily do things at our current infancy state.

However he was busy with work and decided not to continue Igolocal back then. This is not a surprise, its just the consequence of a decided abandonment.

Would love to see someone else taking a lead into providing this service, we would gladly collaborate.

If it isn't taken up by the original igolocal project again, I doubt any new attempts will take off at all. Imo the utility is at the margins, say in rural america or for the odd dozen players in the arab world, ... but it only happens if there is a critical mass overall. I wonder if players would be willing to add themselves again to any similar project which is beneficial to go worldwide, but less so for their local club.

I wasn't following the igolocal forum, but abandoning it like this without any communication isn't best practice in my opinion.

I don’t know the reasons … people can die, people can get broke or ill, etc., so … IMHO in theory this isn’t best practice ;)
