Teacher Review Service

Post by Javaness2 »

Hi,

I am offering a new an exciting service. The first Go Teacher review service!

Go Teachers or Prospective Students can both contact me to avail of this service.
Prices are as follows: Regular lesson price of teacher + 10% cut, with additional 10 euro charge for publishing the review. Additional special goodwill payments accepted

I have taken Go lessons with many teachers, in addition to which I have over 15 years of experience in the public education system. This leaves me very well placed to assess the teaching skills of whoever is paying me.

Love,
Javaness

Could you post your rank graph? I know that I have opinions on a lot of teachers (not ones on KGS though). However, my demonstrated lack of progress under any of them makes me doubt my qualification to assess them! :blackeye:

Forgetting about boring parody for a moment and ignoring the principle possibility that you might have already hit the boundary of your upper potential, typically pupils taking lessons do not make progress if they do not also a) apply advice, b) play regularly, c) review their own games, d) study go theory in literature and e) solve problems. Most pupils doing all of that improve quickly.

Potential issues:

1. One lesson (if that's the plan) is not sufficient to evaluate a teacher, especially not for one-on-one instruction.
2. People learn differently - each teacher has their own style.
3. Teachers may have comparative advantages over difference student strength ranges.

Yes! So what then are the qualities of a good teacher? :blackeye:

- adjusting his teaching to a pupil's learning style
- identifying, explaining and correcting a pupil's (especially: important) weaknesses reasonably quickly
- answering 99% of a pupil's questions well (the 1% may be related to moves of almost identical value or the teacher's limited knowledge)
- motivating a pupil to do the also necessary study outside outside the lessons

What are the advantages of using your services versus freely asking a bunch of people similar to one's own level who have taken go lessons for their recommendation as to go teachers they have studied under?

I teach for free. Please make an appointment to evaluate my lesson. To get an idea of my teaching style, you may read my sample lesson below, free of charge:

Sample lesson.

Your reading is weak, very weak. You must read deeper. To practice, do more tsumego. Much too weak. :-x

For a minor gratuity, I will prepare your review for you in advance.

***June two-for-one special*** For an additional fee, I will invite a teacher of your choice to co-teach.
Patience, grasshopper.

Out of curiosity, does Go n games still exist?

I don't think so, but a lot of the teachers from it split off to make the Experience Go in China trip which is similar.

I have already thought of these problems. By paying me to take multiple lessons with the same professional, you can overcome any such fears.
I can also cope with 3, by thinking for shorter periods of time, and distracting myself during the game.

I think I've just missed the point of this thread rather spectacularly...
