Just before today`s NHK cup match was a documentary about a ceremony to mark Kobayashi Koichi becoming Honorary Meijin. One of the guests was Cho Chikun.
Now, we`ve all seen the pictures of his rather individualistic barnet*, but I`d always assumed it was the outcome of intensely rifling his fingers through his hair during a tough game.
However, even at this extremely formal ceremony Cho looked like he`d been putting his fingers into the electricity socket. I cannot help wondering about this.
* Is he actually unaware of his appearance?
* Is it an image that he is deliberately cultivating?
* Is there another explanation? (Is he in serious need of anti-frizz styling products?)
Of course, none of this is all that important. He`s the 25th Honinbo, and that`s all we need to know. Still, if anybody can shine a light on my questions, my idle curiosity would like to hear.
* For people who originate outside the Sceptred Isle, "barnet" is a word for hairstyle.

I like it because it says to me, "I'm one of the best players of all time and I just roll out of bed and head for the board".

Re: Mr Cho`s hairstyle
I believe I read somewhere that Cho Chikun's hobby was swimming, the chlorine and water can take a serious toll on the hair, but seriously most fashion buffs would waste half a can of egg white and plastic just to get that volume out of their hair, and still not look half as good.Tami wrote: * Is there another explanation? Re: Mr Cho`s hairstyle
Apparently he isn’t obsessed with smearing yucky stuff in his hair just so that other people may think he is “orderly”, he just doesn’t seem to care about what others think about his hair. I like this, in a world where a majority of people seems to be preoccupied with superficial stuff.
