Re: Like the wind...
some words/ideas just don't translate well. try coming up with your own words for sente and gote, for example. the best I can do still feels like a paragraph for each.
check (as in chess) almost works for atari, but not quite
and as you can see from the recent threads on thickness (Fairbairn, Tami, Jasaek), there are nuances of meaning for the different words that are totally lost when we translate them all into the same single word.

How about not translating them into the one single word!

Re: Like the wind...
Just started a Malkovich game against Padraig (Boidhre), hopefully this will help with my game as I am in a rut at the moment.

However, I am quite looking forward to our tournament in Cork next weekend, these usually give me lots of motivation and have been some of the best weekends I've had in the past two years.

Re: Like the wind...
Good tournament this past weekend.
Managed to win 3 out of 5 so I am delighted. Will post a game later when I have converted it into sgf. Actually I've learnt that writing down the game and playing at the same time are not a good idea, I completely got distracted and my middle and endgame were terrible. The two games that I lost, I had a good game but messed up towards the end, got complacent and lost by about 15 points in each case. Has anyone else had this experience when recording their game?

Yes, I stopped recording games during the game due to that. Try to record what you and your opponent can remember afterwards.tomukaze wrote:Has anyone else had this experience when recording their game?

It seems like it could be a learnable skill. Here are my comments on recording games. Remembering afterwards is difficult (but perhaps also a learnable skill).oren wrote:Yes, I stopped recording games during the game due to that. Re: Like the wind...
Ok here is one of the games I lost at the tournament. I only recorded up to move 171, after that I gave up as it was nearing the end.
I was black in this game.
I felt that move 89 was the wrong direction, I should have played P18 block.
C3 was a mistake too by me I think, K2 would have been better and leave the aji in the corner for later, well my opinion anyway.
Also I messed about in the upper left for a bit and in the end got some move in sente on the outside.
Any comments/suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Re: Like the wind...
Some comments:
Move 5: Tengen is very influence oriented while the 3-3 stone cedes influence. I'm not sure they work well together.
Move 16: O3 doesn't look right. I think black can just push through to cut white.
Move 27: I agree that this is not good. black's outside group is much more important than the points in the corner. Maybe a move like F5 to strengthen it?
Move 43: I think black should stabilise the bottom group before trying something over here. In addition, be wary of white's thickness. It may be better to approach the top left directly if black plays on the left side.
Move 61 and on: This is toothpaste go. Whatever black plays to help one group will hurt the other. A few moves earlier, white's group was relatively eyeless and starting to get surrounded. Black could have made a running fight of it, but needs to take care of both black groups to do so.
Move 73: Black has build a wall on the bottom, so he needs to use it. Rather than the turn, perhaps a jump into the middle of white's eyespace would make up for the earlier loss? Black is already ahead in the pushing battle on the right, so he could make territory and influence while white connects on dame.
After that point, I think white had a pretty commanding lead. Black left all the fighting on the lower side with 6 points in the corner and some heavy groups, plus the bottom right, which wasn't large. White has two pretty strong groups, plus 17 points of profit on the bottom and some nice potential on the left side.

Re: Like the wind...
Thanks Skydyr,
not sure the game was over after move 73, it seems to me White has lots of potential but little actual profit. Some tatical and strategic errors from there seem to have lost me the game.

Yes I agree with you here, 43 was quite bad. But I was in a loose mood an felt I needed a stone in that area, perhaps the choice was a bad oneskydyr wrote:Some comments:

Re: Like the wind...
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the game was over. Just that black was left in a disadvantageous position and needed to play actively to confuse things and catch up.
I did think of a couple other things for later on, actually:
First, when white invaded the top right corner, I thought black might cede the corner for a wall facing left and then try to make a big fight on the top side.
Second, rather than run with that stone on the top side after the corner was settled, it might work to leave it as aji and approach the top left at F17. It would complicate a lot of white responses, I think.

Re: Like the wind...
I figure I lose 2 to 3 stones in strength when I record while playing (more when I first started). But with practice, its worth it to me to have a game record when I'm done.oren wrote:Yes, I stopped recording games during the game due to that. Recording after would be better, but that's a different skill I don't quite have yet. Its getting better though. I can practice this skill with casual games.

Re: Like the wind...
Ok here is the first game I lost in the tournament. It was alot of fighting and I made some big tactical errors that lost me the game. Again recording the game affected my play, especially during some of the crutial moments of the game.
Anyway here is it for your amusement
