How to attack profitably?

Post by Toge »

I've started playing again after rather long break and I've lost at least 2 stones in strength. I was 1 dan before, but now 3 kyu opponents are giving me trouble. Anyway, this is a game with me playing black (as 1d) and opponent (2d) playing white. I lost the game by 34½ points. A big surprise. I think there's some blind spots to my understanding: none of my groups died and I felt I got many of sente moves correct in yose. I will appreciate any help and tips.

I`ve only had time for a glance, but I think you got into difficulty very early - move 15 should have been e15. After White f17 (ikken tobi) you can leap to H15.

The way you played, the cut at f14 was too painful. Neither group died, but the groups sure were inefficient.

And I think your "disimprovement" is only temporary. I expect to see you at 1d again soon.

I think you played pretty well until the early midgame (you could check the "Joseki" again and see if you and your opponent played ccorectly) but could have been a bit more active with your weak groups. Now and then you played some forcing moves, which were more in favour of your opponent. Later on you left too many weaknesses (weak shapes) behind (without being behind on the board, point-wise) and at the start of the endgame/late middlegame you played far too many small moves.

Big thank you SoDesuNe for thorough analysis of my game.

* Settle groups early, preferably at the same time attacking.
* Upper right corner: read variation to make white group split up and weak.
* Urgency of move deals with weakness of groups.
* Attacking is more important than taking peanuts. Moves that are gote for both players should stay on board for a long time.
* Late endgame, develop prudence to make only gainful plays.

you let him cut you in the beginning on top left corner and you lost flow.
41: unnecessary peep at first glance. these exchanges add up to mean something later so be careful.

33: i think this is a perfect time to atari E19. because it is related to L&D of other black group on left side.
I can see that your reading is almost equal to mine but if you can find those suttle exchanges during fighting that will make you stronger.
81: wrong direction...shoud play right side. you were ahead at this position.
85: should have connected with normal jump
101: learn to give up stones for bigger purpose. you should have atari two stone and take big sente...you would have won easily.
109: do you know that you would have won if you didn't save that large group? think about if you penuki middle.. and he kills group..you take big moyo that is big as that group.
I know it is hard to think about giving up that big group but...if you count ..it is not big as you thought.
131: P4 would have been bad for white..... black top group is alive because of top connection. didnt need to worry about that two stone.
151: if you know you are losing..why not trade and go for the kill. play to win not to lose by few.
155: at this point..you are not playing with clear thought.. i can sense your "all in with Queen high" mentality.
209: whynot ko?
