Why buy slate and shell?

General discussions about gobans, etc., go here. If you're selling go equipment, it should go in the Trading Post.

Class would be buying equipment and donating it to your local club. Buying expensive equipment and showing it off is, well, being a show off.

Well, since I am my local Go club, I have a clear conscience :D and since the other folks around here who I play with are not yet that enthusiastic that they’d buy their own equipment, I have even enough boards and stones to accommodate a dozen players  (only one set is a “classic” goban with S&S stones, though ;) )

Greetings, Tom

I'm not a big fan of tricking out my go equipment, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it... especially if you're planning to teach folks. Good causes deserve good PR.

I do not think people buy expensive equipment to show off. There may be some but it is not the norm. I enjoy craftsmanship and artistry. Well made boards and stones are functional art in my opinion. It is not about showing off. If I had more money, I would buy nicer equipment. I buy what I can afford. I'm always happy for the people who purchase beautiful boards and stones. They are helping support the artists that make the fine Go boards and stones. If these people could not make a living making Go boards and stones then we would loose something culturally. People deserve to be paid for their talents.

Often times, I hear people degrade or comment on what people spend on something. It seems to come from jealousy. Be thankful that there is a small minority of people supporting this industry.

Hmmm... Human Tooth.

I think just the mildest soap or very diluted detergents would be just fine. :)

Do you plan to keep your shell stones or do you plan to throw them away after you finish your clamshell cleaning commercial?
