Re:
The tournament arrangement is very similar to that of the Mlily Cup. The only major difference is the prize money: 2.2 million vs 1.8 million for winning the title. That is about 340K USD, in comparison to Ing Cup's 400K, very substantial.EdLee wrote:To complement the 104 notation.
Prizes
winner - 2.2M RMB
runner up - 800K RMB
tier 3 - 280K RMB
tier 4 - 160K RMB
The sponsor 新奧 (ENN) is a major Chinese new energy enterprise.

which can be translated literally to "Xinao Cup World Open Go Championship". The sponsor might want to use its official English name, then "ENN Cup" would do. These things will become clear when the preliminary tournament starts (24th May).

Sorry to bother, but I'm a bit confused by this. I see seven names..is it a single elimination tournament to decide who the world representative is? Or are there multiple representatives?gamesorry wrote:

Re: New Tournament: æ°å¥§ cup open tournament
Yes, there are 50 parallel single elimination tournaments to choose 50 players who will join the 14 seeded players in the first round of the main tournament. One of these 50 is the world group, 2 are female, and 2 are senior. I wonder if females are compelled to play in the female group, I think they should be able to enter the regular 45 if they fancy their chances against the men (I recall Yu Zhiying beating Choi Cheolhan and Mok Jinseok recently) as 2 of 64 strikes me as a bit stingy, though probably not actually far off what would probably happen without dedicated special groups.hyperpape wrote:Sorry to bother, but I'm a bit confused by this. The world group has
I don't know if all of those 50 groups have 32 players, if so that's a pretty huge tournament!Quota allocation is as follows: 12 for Europe, 12 for North America, 8 for other regions. The organizer will make adjustment if insufficient enrolment accurs. For the world group, the prize is 2000RMB(before tax) each round per person.

Edit: I just checked igokisen and the 45 open groups have 7 players each, including 2 of the top female pros Song Ronghui and Choi Jung, but Yu Zhiying is in the female group. Rui Naiwei is in the senior group.

Re: New Tournament: æ°å¥§ cup open tournament
Looking at http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/xa.html, making only 2 seats with the female group does look very stingy as there are 48 players competing for them, including Li He, Yu Zhiying, Wang Chenxing, O Yujin (actually I didn't recognise many more, O and Li are around 220 on goratings.org), whereas there are only 13 in the senior group. I presume the pairings were random, but the senior group is unfortunate and could have done with some seeding: Nie Weiping, Yoo Changhyuk, Rui Naiwei, and Yu Bin (all still pretty strong pros, around 200 on goratings) are all in the same half of the draw, whilst the other half has no big names, I only recognise Fang Tianfeng because he was the teacher of Liu Yuanbo (MilanMilan), and Yang Shihai because I think he was the trainer of the Hong Kong team at the WMSG.

Re: New Tournament: æ°å¥§ cup open tournament
A few results from WBaduk:
Li Zhe 6d beat Hong Kipyo 7d (I thought Li had given up Go to study philosophy at university, maybe he's finished or AlphaGo made him get back into it?)
Chang Hao 9d lost to Song Sanghoon 2d
Fan Yunruo 4d beat Lee Donghoon 7d (rising Korean player and recent winner of GS Galtex Cup in Korea)
Heo Yeongho 9d beat Liu Xing 7d
No news from the world group, maybe Mateusz will post soon.
