Re: Books with or without board?
You don't need to use the web-browser plugin, just download and execute the KGS .jar file (if you have java installed on your system)
It's available here : http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jar
To install java (if not done yet) :

@jlt:
shin.gokgs asks for a login, which I don't have.
Upon "sign up", it directs to the KGS website.
But there is no option to sign in or up!
Any idea how one gets a KGS login (without having a go client that already connects to KGS)?
Thanks!!
Tryss suggestion does not work for me, so I tried yours and failed!jlt wrote:Without installing anything, you can use shin.gokgs.com. It's not as good as the regular KGS client but usable.

You need to use the regular Java client to register. (Or get some friendly forum member to make one for you, I'm on phone atm).Jika wrote: Any idea how one gets a KGS login (without having a go client that already connects to KGS)?
You could play on OGS. It's all browser based and has lots of beginners. online-go.com

@ Uberdude:
Yes, OGS works fine, thanks!
I neither have the Java browser plugin (only supported for IE11, afaik) nor a working Java environment on my laptop
@ Tryss:
I've sent you a PM today as not to turn this thread into a Linux forum.
I get a fatal error, which, as I've found out after sending you the PM, seems to be inherent in (and reproducible with) OpenJDK.
They suggested Oracle JDK, which I downloaded in V12 and V8, but the installation instructions I followed failed ("path-alternatives" were accepted in bash, only the system default Java stayed OpenJDK9, so, no change).
Since all installations instruction copy the JDK files into different system folders, I got afraid of ruining my system and gave up!
I'll be fine with OGS and IGS, at this moment more than I can chew.
I'm drowning in tsumegos and possibilities to play AIs, so no hurry with KGS.
