I am using a macbook running MacOSX10.6 (aka snow leapord) and had trouble installing IGS on my macbook.

I first obtained the .dmg.gz.gz file from the direct link http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/glgo/ but it would not read as a disk image.

Instead I browsed throughout the website and finally found this link
ftp://ftp.pandanet.co.jp/Go/igs_clients/Macintosh/OSX/

I downloaded the glGo-1.1dmg (2003-2005 version) which does work, but it is a little frustrating that this file from 2005 works while the 2008 version as shown on the front page doesn't http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/.

Does anyone know how to install the .dg.gz.gz from http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/glgo/ ?

well, first of all, I think you've got one too many ".gz"'s on your filename
I downloaded glGo-1.4.dmg.gz from the link you gave

second, its not a disk image, its a "zip" file (gzip -- gnuzip, actually). So you've got to unzip it first

open up a terminal window (Applications/Utilities) and type:
gunzip glGo-1.4.dmg.gz

that should then give you your diskimage: glGo-1.4.dmg

Thanks for the clarification. I just assumed it was a disk image because it showed .dmg and I did not realize the .gz suffix meant something else. In windows is their a way

Thank you for the straight forward instructions! :)
Originally, I googled online and thought I might have had to download a program: http://www.ehow.com/how_5320076_open-gz-file.html
The steps you gave did work, but I had some complications because the file downloaded was indeed "glGo-1.4.dmg.gz.gz" with two .gz's instead of 1.

Troubleshooting for readers with the "glGo-1.4.dmg.gz.gz" file:
1. open up a terminal window (Applications/Utilities)
type: /Users/username/Downloads/glGo-1.4.dmg.gz.gz

Note: I substituted my actual username with "username".
I included /Users/username/Downloads b/c it was in my downloads folder.
To find the your file location ctrl-click the file and click get info and look at the location under "where."

2. Find the unzipped file. The first .gz should have been truncate so now the file reads
"glGo-1.4.dmg.gz" My file was in the download's folder.

3. ctrl click the file and select "Get info" then rename the file glGo-1.4.dmg.gz to glGo-1.4.dmg in "Name and Extension"

4. Double click the glGo-1.4.dmg

5. Drag the program to the applications folder.

yeah, I left out the steps of navigating to the actual location of the file you downloaded. glad to hear that you were able to find it.

and you probably should have just renamed the file initially to remove the extra .gz, but sounds like it still unzipped it and you just renamed it successfully afterward. cool.

for windows, I think WinZip supports gzipped files.
I always install cygwin on every windows box I touch, so I usually have a full suite of linux tools at my disposal anyway.

Should just use Goban, it's way better than glGo. Screenshot attached also, ripped the board graphics from Tetsuki for iPad.

I was going to recommend Goban, but it hasn't been updated in years. I still use it, but it's got some annoying bugs with variations & editing the game info.

In case you have a bunch of sgf files on your Mac you might also enjoy using SGFTools: http://github.com/downloads/imabuddha/S ... -Tools.dmg

From the SL description:
Quote:
Currently has an SGF file Spotlight metadata importer that allows the user to quickly search for one or more SGF properties such as Event, Result, Winner, Handicap, etc. Also adds the most important properties to the More Info section of the OSX file Get Info window. Latest update includes a Quicklook view generator showing board positions in preview, coverflow, and large icon view.

Goban looks more user friendly. I'll give it a try.
What is interesting about the newer version of IGS is that the stones are 3-D.
I got a slight headache because of the display.
I'm used to the KGS 2-D display.
