I like canadian because it's more flexible. Normal overtime usually makes me play faster than I'd like, and the division isn't that hard to to, usually.

I dread having to play it offline, though. Counting stones and setting clocks to play must be a pain in the ass if you never did it before.

I'd like to take part too. Please sign me up for round 2. Although daal on KGS is now at 3k? and even beat a 4k yesterday for the first time ever (yay!), I hardly ever play on that account, and the account I use regularly is pushing the 6k barrier but hasn't broken it yet.

BTW, I think Canadian time is great, at least online. When I use it, I almost never get into time trouble, not even in blitz games at 1:00 + 3:00/25

When would this tournament start? I'm interested, but for real-life reasons I'd rather not have any obligations to play more tournament games until about June 10. Possibly entering in group 3 would make that possible? (I'm just about KGS 5 kyu; I see there are other 5 kyus in G3.)

When we've got a few more players, and then probably a fortnight or so per round. So yeah, you'll be safely out of the games until mid-late June at the earliest :)

It sounds harder than it is. Often in a real life tournament there are people around to help you count out stones and make sure it is all correct. (That has been my experience)

Additionally, in an ironic twist, digital timers now count the stones for you, so it is even easier.

I'll play. I don't know my exact rank (is there such a thing?), but I should probably be in group 3 or group 4.

Im down yo! Its about time I started playing more. Im 7k KGS.
The only obstacle that I might have is the time of the tourney as well. With the end of the school year aproaching I have to study for finals. I also have to take summer school in the summer in addition to a possible job. I'll definately try to make time for this though. :D

To jordus (if a mod could pass this along to him as well)

I think the time idea i perposed was taken differently.

for the 2 hour per player i ment as the final game. not every round xD

There seems to be only 40/48 slots taken if I am to believe the list in the first post, so put me down as a 1/2k player please :). Any time settings work for me, though if I may offer an opinion I am a Canadian who prefers Japanese byo-yomi :razz:

Edit: I guess I'll go with 2k because that's what I currently am on KGS.

Only noticed the word filter today. Hilarious. :lol:

On topic, I'm looking forward to this tournament, since I need to play more on KGS. :)

As we have exactly 40, which works just as nicely as 48 (but with one less initial group), I would like to suggest that we call this the participation for the first title tournament and I start trying to separate groups, re-poll for more detail on time control, and start the idea of getting a schedule together.

Does this sound sensible?

If so, initial groups are:

Group 5

tabemasu (7d)
Araban (5d)
HermanHiddema (4d)
Violence (4d)
freegame (3d)
Magicwand (3d)
DeadTired (2d)
Jonas (1d) I've put Jonas in this one because he holds a 3d account on ORO, and it's as good an initial tiebreak as any

Group 4

zinger (1d)
topazg (1d)
lindentree (1d)
Shaddy (1d)
Kirby (1d)
quantumf (1k)
daniel_the_smith (1k)
Rafa (2k)

Group 3

dfan (3k)
Marcus (4k)
GoCat (5k)
MountainGo (5k)
Nikolas73 (5k)
k1ndofblue (5k)
padic (5k)
actorios (6k) I've put Actorios in group 3 because he's got the highest KGS graph rank out of the 6k players I have the KGS alias for

Group 2

fuchsnoir (6k)
SoDesuNe (6k)
Chew Terr (6k)
WatariWill (6k)
Li Kao (6k)
daal (7k)
oren (7k)
mosdefgo (7k)

Group 1

mic (8k)
tj86430 (8k)
rubin427 (8k)
Phelan (9k)
ChradH (9k)
Jordus (9k)
karaklis (10k)
POGO (10k)

Does this all sound sensible, and are there any objections?

Next stages of preparation:

1. Ruleset

Do we need a poll? Does anyone feel strongly for or against any rulesets?

2. Timing

I'm tempted to go for 40 minutes standard time. Because I want participation, I'm scoring the time controls as "positive votes" - "negative votes * 1.5", and get as follows:

240 + 5/5 -> 6 - 51 = -45
120 + 10/5 -> 8 - 48 = -40
90 + 10/5 -> 14 - 27 = -13
60 + 20/5 -> 25 - 15 = 10
50 + 20/5 -> 23 - 16.5 = 6.5
40 + 30/5 -> 28 - 18 = 10
30 + 30/5 -> 29 - 19.5 = 9.5

As 60, 40, and 30 all score very closely, I've gone for the middle of the 3. Does anyone strongly object to this, and will it cause some signed up players to pull out? Also, once we have agreed on the basic time, I'll open up overtime discussions.

3. Draw method

I'm going to pseudo seed, as there's no need for further than that because of the double elimination system. So, first round is group 1 vs group 2, but within groups each draw is random (so any one of group 1 could play any one of group 2). Similarly, the winners will be randomly ordered, and paired against a random member of group 3 for the following round. All loser's brackets will be done the same, with newcomers into the losers bracket playing people that were there in the previous round. Once the 5th group has entered, I intend on seeding the top 4 not to play until the semi finals, but other than that randomise. a) does this all make sense, and b) does this all seem reasonable?

4. Schedule

I'm envisaging allowing 2 weeks for each round?

5. Other stuff

What have I missed out?

Seems ok to me. :D

Hope people take less than two weeks though.

As for ruleset, I propose AGA rules. I don't feel strongly about it, I'll play whatever ruleset you pick.
