Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

:b8: should be predictable, as the Eye Stealing Tesuji. :w7: is bad for two reasons. First, it invites the eye stealing tesuji when White wants to make eyes. Second, it makes :b4: look better, because it protects :b6: from capture.

The one space jump is obviously better. :)

Also, Kirby's mention of "my group" may indicate a problem with his thinking. In this game we expect that most of White's stones will die, so that some of them will live. White has to be ready to sacrifice stones. Thinking of his stones as a unit may make it psychologically difficult to sacrifice some of them. Kirby's :w7: almost connects :w3: and :w5:, pretty much making them into a group.

I've only played/watched this game a few times so am far from an expert in it, but I have found often one does live by killing some stones in a counterattack (because they had to over-attack and get cut/bad shape to deny you 2 eyes), though this will obviously only happen after many moves have been played with barely dead fragments scattered across the board so can't be an initial aim.

It does seem like playing that way directly will just push Black to solidify his own shape. After N13, the upper right quadrant seems like it'll be very inhospitable for White, right? I guess white could try N13-M12 to not quite settle things as much. Does that make any sense?

The Adkins Principle:

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).
