Re: An Expression of Personality
Perhaps instead of saying that it reflects the personality, it may be more accurate to say personal philosophy. I have a rather peaceful personality as well, but if I think my opponent is trying to get too much or leaving weakness, I attack as strongly as I believe I can get away with.

Re: An Expression of Personality
some people like offense some prefer defense.
some will let their opponent get away with their liking.
some will make sure they dont get what they like.
go is so profound that there is no right or wrong on how they play.
and their personality will reflect 100% on the board.

Honest, polite, non-aggressor
Very interesting... I wonder if it's true.

I suspect our posts are more revealing.

Re: An Expression of Personality
Give me a break!
This reminds me of something that might appear in Cosmopolitan.
Your perfume reveals your personality!
The way you sneeze reveals your personality!
And it's about as credible. Maybe if you are talking about OTB games, where it is possible to observe someone in person and see whether they are calm or nervous, easily frustrated or happy, etc. But even that probably depends on the specific game.
Also, it is possible to deliberately change your style in go, but that doesn't mean your personality will change along with it.

Re: An Expression of Personality
I think people do have a "go personality", but it isn't necessarily related to their everyday personality. Maybe a player really likes shoulder hits. That doesn't translate to off-the-board behavior (punching people in the shoulder?), but it's a recognizable thing if you play them enough. I remember reading somewhere that Kitani Minoru just didn't like keima that much, and didn't play it as often as other pros. Even without understanding why, sometimes I look at the game of someone I've played many times and think "that's exactly the kind of move you like to make".

Re: An Expression of Personality
i remember reading something (probably a preface to a book, i don't know) by Sakata Eio, where he wrote about his style, that he tended to play greedy and tried to use every stone to 100% and how it matched his personality. he also mentioned Ishida Yoshio and his peaceful style matching his personality and on the other hand Kato Masao, "who is also a really nice young man" (rough quotation), contrasting his attacking style. too bad i can't remember where i read it, i have to write this only from memory, so it is not at all precise...
anyone remember what am i talking about?
yes, liking / disliking shoulder hits / keima / whatever doesn't say anything, but i believe overall picture does. not so much the actual moves, but why do you play them, what do you want to achieve

Spilling gasoline feels good.
I might be wrong, but probably not.
