The great irony is that all this hype about sandbagging just caused an otherwise honest man to become a sandbagger too...

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It's rather embarrassing really. I had a train of thought after Lorill's post that made me think:

a) Wow, what a silly reason to enter as 5k (I always hate the idea that I'd enter too high and people would think I was just over-bragging about my ability or something)
b) Wait a minute, now I'm a sandbagger
c) Wait a minute, what if all the other sandbaggers are people who have heard of Tygem's rank issues and sandbagged
d) I'm part of the problem, oops!

Ah well, I suppose I'll change it up a few ranks :)

If it helps, Topazg, I registered as 1d on the English client, and one my first (and only) game.

I'm 2d on my Korean account, where I've played many more games (I started out as 5k as the initial rank there). Maybe you could try out 3d or so... :-)

I think the proper way to express this chain of reasoning is like this:

I dunno, I had more of an image of this:

"Bwahaha, 4k it is!"

Seriously though, Topazg, you have too low an opinion of your skill. =) I think you should enter as 3d and have done with it. =D

Tygem 3d is really not that strong. KGS 1k actually feels stronger to me, but then again, it may be that I'm just so used to playing on the Korean servers that I sometimes have trouble with very solid playing styles...

Hehe, I was thinking more that Tygem players must just be much stronger for their equivalent ranks, but it sounds like that isn't the case around the kyu/dan border, so I'll probably reset to 1k or something - I still want to earn my dan rank if I can!

I think it's really hard to make a direct comparison since the ranking systems are different - and the style of play is different. In any case, you can just play a few games, and you'll get a feel for the style.

Oh man, Tygem is fun. Since I registered as an ipad user, and am apparently not clever enough to figure out how to reset my account, I’ll be clawing my way up from 18k.

Even at that rank, I had two games where I blew it in heated fighting, and two games where I was completely outgunned (of 14 matches total in the past couple days).

By comparison, on KGS I am a soft 5k.

Honestly, I have no idea where my rank will settle in at.

First minus point for tygem: The escaper system. Looks like you can't resume a game(possibly only after a few minutes) and instead get autoloss.
And who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to force restart the computer to install updates? Seriously Microsoft. And not just like in XP where any program with unsaved data could stop the shutdown. No simply terminate them.

Looks like people on tygem have a very similar style to what I do. But it looks like they know different tesujies from kgs players of my strength.

You can just re-register with a different user name.

Tygem gives a disconnected player five minutes to return.

I take it you're running Vista? On 7 you get the same annoying popup but it doesn't force shutdown if you don't respond.

I prefer the KGS escape policy. But there are many people who prefer a stricter system.

I'm on 7, not vista. If you ignore the dialog often/long enough it gets a countdown too. Found some registry hack that supposedly fixes it. Hope it does work. But what annoyed me most is how it force killed my programs without allowing me to cancel. Program asks me "Do you want to save your unsaved stuff?" Windows answers "I don't care, you're dead" after a second. That "feature" basically causes an intentional system crash.

"Oh man, Tygem is fun. Since I registered as an ipad user, and am apparently not clever enough to figure out how to reset my account, I’ll be clawing my way up from 18k"

To reset your account rank and preserve your account name:
go to http://www.tygembaduk.com. Sign in with ipad tygem account. go to Account. Delete account(obviously all data is lost). The identical account name will be available and you can re-register at http://www.tygembaduk.com. That account is immediately available on the tygem ipad with the correct rank.
