Hmm, you'll find I don't have deep reasons
I don't really see his high stone in the upper right to be that big of a deal. If he tries to undercut me I defend or pincer his stone no problem. I like games where I can develop in a clear, straightforward manner. With the high enclosure the direction of development is always laid out before you.

So White's made a mistake. There's no reason to directly answer 12 because I have a side extension so his followup moves only threaten to take territory and don't affect the life and death of my group there, whereas I can start attacking with 13 because he neglected to defend his group. I should get a good result.

Both moves are possible, but I suspect the corner approach is more common in professional games. Here is an example (Yamashita Keigo versus Cho HanSuyng, Fujitsu Cup, 2008). You can probably figure out the sequence of moves which produced this situation:

I'm a little torn as to what to do.
