so white can't surround. I have a reduction at (a) later. I expect Magicwand to play at (b). I didn't like the option of

Your move seems soft to me. White blocking at c7 is not sente so tenuki is an option. Cutting asks white if he wants to save d7. He may choose to play atari at f7 and push along building influence (yes pushing on 5th line). If this happens now c8 becomes a wasted move. White can also exchange d8 for c9 at some point which helps fix the cut in exchange for giving b a little more territory. If you cut you have possibilities to activate f3 and attack the white wall, such as below.

The thing to do is to unhide this later, when it won't matter.
But my attitude, even as a beginner, was, you gotta cut, you just gotta. Otherwise, what are you doing? Admittedly, the cut will not always be best, but if you are not willing to cut, maybe you should have played somewhere else earlier.
As I say, it is attitude, not even a rule of thumb. But how often is it right to give White such a strong shape?
