a are effective. It's like pushing into a knight's move to cut it instead of cutting at the waist. Of course sometimes reading can justify such bad shape moves, such as in the game of mine below on move 51 (in which I felt dirty for playing such a crude move, but I can't cut the waist as he has the ladder, and note how the p13 q13 excahnge means g12 has lots of liberties to support the bad shape kosumi and r13 doesn't exist), but I don't see that being the case here.

That's interesting insight, thanks. The reason I thought this way of cutting would be better is that it seems to apply more pressure onto the two White stones above. However, maybe White has nothing to fear there, yet.
How would you continue as White, if I may ask? Would you play "a" next or something different?

This is a stubborn move by me but I think it's a case where I already got on the train and am now along for the ride. I gave only passing consideration to the other extension because it seems spiritless and weak.

I think the cut that I played is better shape. It doesn't involve pushing white from behind.
