Re: STOLEN!
What kind of bike was it? Make? Model? Color?
And the backpack too. What kind was it?
It is a long shot, but the more info is spread around, the better the chances of recovery.

Echoing all the thoughts here. I wish you and all your family the best in what must be unbelievably trying times.

Re: STOLEN!
Thank you all for the well wishes. I really needed to vent. Every time I think "that's the last straw!" there comes another straw...
The bike is a red 2007 Specialized Sirrus. I posted a picture of it in the the model in the driving thread. It's got some accessories attached; water bottle, LED headlight and tail-light, and Armadillo tires.

The backpack has no value; it's a really, really old navy Eastman backpack with a leather bottom. It's got a big hole in the side actually. The only thing of any value in it was the book (which is like $18 from Kiseido). The only reason I'm worried about it is because of the pay stubs.

You can out a hold on your credit report. Any checks will require a specific authorization from you. It will be a pain in the short run , especially if you are applying for credit. But it will go a step toward preventing ID theft.

How exactly does that work? Does it really only affect applying for new credit?

Item number two on this page is what I am referring to. I don't know all of the details but I do no it is one of the primary avenues of protection afforded holders of consumer credit. I also checked my paystubs. All but the final four digits are x'ed out. Maybe yours were the same?

Re: STOLEN!
First off, sorry to hear all this man. This sucks.
This is where life is starting to throw the below-the-belt punches, and it all just stacks up.
Like everybody else has said, keep holding strong. You will get through this.
Hopefully it should be. Mainly done for this exact reason. Company's don't want identify theft caused by this as it looks bad for them as well.

Re: STOLEN!
No such luck. That was the first thing I checked when I remembered they were in there. The whole number is on there. I'll be contacting the credit agencies I guess.
I checked on renter's insurance; it would be covered but it looks like the deductible would have been almost the cost of the bike new, so it wouldn't have helped much. Still, I'm going to finally break down and get it. I've procrastinated about it for years and it's really pretty cheap; there's no good excuse for not having it.

@Fwiffo:
Several months ago, when those of us at GD suffered a loss of one of our favorite websites, you and other programmers built up L19. If we had to pay someone to do it, we never could have afforded it. We greatly appreciate that. Now that you have suffered losses, it is our turn to return the favor.
A bunch of us have made donations to a paypal account. There is currently $404.05 in it. That may be enough to buy a another bike, and maybe a few rolls of tp. You can access the account using the email "5ab at-sign fifthavenuebooks period com", and a password which you will find in a PM.
Thank you,
Joaz and the guys at L19
PS: When you acccess the account, I recommend changing the email address. When you do, please post it here. Otherwise, late donations would end up in my account, not yours.

Re: STOLEN!
Please don't do this; I can't accept it. I hope I didn't give the impression that my financial situation is dire. I have a good, reliable job and a mostly frugal lifestyle. I mean, think of the money I've saved by riding a bike instead of owning a car.
I'd rather the money be saved as an emergency fund for the community. We may have a sufficient supply of enthusiastic programmers, but who knows if hosting is going to become an issue again.
