i feel that i was never behind until i made that mistake
if i played as below i would have more than enough points to win.
i thought about every move before submittin but this move was not one of them..

i see that many obs think i was behind.
i assure you that my thinkness was thick enough to overcome point differental.
i am not claiming that i was ahead but i maintained the fine balance and didnt let my opponent get away.
above diag. i am ahead at least 10 points...

IMO when playing white..all you have to do is maintain the balance.
6.5 komi will speak towards the end.

I think the ko was a bit early, and he could've attacked my top group sooner to make more center, but in any case, the game went south once he atari'd me. No reason for me to directly respond. If he just defends his group then all I have is the move at the bottom and a sente endgame move at A. I think this board would favor White. At the very least he is not losing.

The game was always super close. I think obs thought by my saying Black was good I meant like 20 points or something. I meant I felt that it was easier to consolidate territory as Black :P By the way Magic Wand's endgame is pretty good.

Thank you, this was the most entertaining game I've seen in a while. For the whole duration, any time I logged on, this is the first thread I would read. High-level, and amusing.

The interesting thing is that throughout the game, most observers thought the two players were at great odds in their evaluation of the position i.e. both players thought they were better.

But postgame review reveals that both players shared almost the same analysis of the position throughout the game.

Indeed - I was surprised to just read the post-game assessments. I guess it goes to show that 4-dans like to talk up their chances when they know they're being watched

Thankyou both very much for the game

i guess this game teaches everyone how important thickness is.
Lee Changho won games using this thickness concept alone.
thickness = points later.

sorry about dumb mistake that shorten the game.
i will try to put more comment on next game.

Magicwand I enjoy your Malkovich games very much but I am surprised at your attitude to the post-game analysis. Certainly your position was very thick and you managed to keep the balance well with white. I am not really qualified to assess the game given that I'm several stones weaker, but the way you speak of the game, you basically had a winning position because you were so thick and suddenly, with one move you were lost. But if you hadn't of made one move you think you would have won.

However, the lesson I would draw from this game is that playing for overwhelming thickness and giving away lots of cash can also be very risky. One reading mistake and all of that thickness might be for nothing, and the game is suddenly over. Whereas black, with all of that cash, even if he is slightly behind in the game, he always has the chance of inducing a white mistake, or making up the difference in the endgame, or whatever.

You seemed to put all of your eggs in one basket, which I am sure would be fine and well for Lee Changho, but...

I don't know, it seems to me that when you make a serious blunder and lose say 15 points, it's hard to come back unless your opponent also makes a serious blunder of his own. Especially at high levels of play you cant really come back from 15 points.
If the misread had come from black he would probably have lost the game too, cash or no cash.

I believe Magicwand has justified his predilection for thickness to us before. If broadly speaking you have thickness and your opponent has profit, you have a good idea of how many points you have to beat. Your opponent's cards are tabled, so to speak.
