lindentree and I will be playing on Sat, Nov 5th at 10PM EST (which is Sunday, Nov 6th 10AM for lindentree, I believe).

Gotta win, and Kirby has to win, so we can have our tournament rematch, right? (Maybe we won't be paired together, but it's possible ...)

Dusk Eagle and I played an interesting game, I was fortunate enough to make life in a corner where I probably shouldn't have, so me+10.5.

I'm curious to hear opinions for where white 10, 40, and 44 should play, if you have one...

19: @DE: why not Q14? By 21, you're overconcentrated.

40 Black E6 looks strong. I'd play D6. It is the textbook threat if he ignores the pincer.

44: This seems the wrong direction. Black plays the natural P9 , and suddenly Q6 is looking worthless. I would either support Q6 by playing P4, and as you build strength in the lower side R10 will become stranded. Or I might play the safer F3.

67: Burning a ko threat here.

Kirby will have to show up first. His profile says "Last visited: Mon Oct 03, 2011", and he hasn't responded to my message about our tournament game yet. Does anyone know another way of contacting him?

20: TTBOMK, current theory is that this is too small to be played immediately. If the pincer were at K4 or K3, then you should do it now. Best is probably D6 - it works very well with your stones over on the right.

22: Just a tad passive. You could play P10 instead, and go for large scale territory. Not only is it territorial, but it prepares moves like P12 if you are feeling conservative or R14 if you are feeling like taking some risks.

23: Seems premature. How about D6 instead? Or D12? or tengen?

36: This feels like the preparation for creating two weak groups - which is, of course, a classic bad idea. The left side is rather unsettled. E15 is interesting here.

42: When we say that you should not create two weak groups, it does not mean that three is ok.:)

45: Maybe the solid extension D16 is better. White has too many weak groups. If you create some weak ones yourself, the future is chaotic. But if you stay strong, one of his will die.

51: Ugly shape. There is way too much aji for white at C7 and B5. If you want to strengthen yourself here, just play the honte move at C5, or at least a solid move at B6.

52: Good move.

58: You can see that he can play G15, right? You have more than 1/2 hour left. Use it to read at least a few moves ahead.
Atari at F14 first, he replies, then you lock him in with F15.

60: Nooooo!

It is dinnertime. Gotta go.

Kirby and I will play Sunday, 21:30 UTC (which Kirby translated to 16:30 EST). Let's hope we got the timezones right.

But if Kirby is still in Michigan, he will just have transitioned to Eastern Daylight Savings Time earlier that morning. I think he will be an hour late for your game.

No, we're on *DT now. On Sunday the US will shift to *ST.

Ahhh... in that case, I'll be an hour early to watch it.

Yes, thank you for the comments.

By the way, I was rather surprised that joaz's only thought on 36 was that it was the wrong place to tenuki. I thought that gripping and netting the cutting stone was necessary at the end of that joseki. Thoughts?

IMHO, white is strong enough on both sides so that if black should run, white will become stronger on both sides while chasing, but black will merely become a juicier target. Maybe black can escape, but it is not worth it for him to try.
Eventually this will change as the center becomes more populated, so in the long run white probably owes a move over there. But currently white's stone at D10 is way more important than black's stone at Q5, so supporting the former is worth more than killing the latter.

Another way of looking at it is this: Suppose black offered white a deal: "Let's each take one stone off of the board and toss it back in the bowl. I'll remove mine at Q5; you remove yours at D10."
Ignoring for the moment why black would make such a bizarre offer, and also ignoring the issue of whether or not it is legal, should white accept?
