Thanks Google! Its hard enough to get baduk in the west without this kind of wrong exposure. I wish this doodle never happened.

Wow. Really? That's all I can say to those people who are really offended that they didn't have their D-day doodle. :qq:

Highbrow activity?

In the April 1949 issue of LIFE magazine there's a humorous article about High-Brow to Low-Brow culture in the US -- and Go is identified as the high-brow game of choice :)

There's another article about Go in LIFE magazine, May 1942:

http://books.google.com/books?id=MFAEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA92&dq=LIFE%20%22game%20of%20go%22&pg=PA92#v=onepage&q=LIFE%20%22game%20of%20go%22&f=false

I couldn't find mention of it on L19.

Kangaroo territory is very difficult to count. It jumps up and down.

Yes, but watch carefully or white will play 2-3 moves in a row...as everyone knows, Australia was founded by criminals.

I have a couple more anime screenshots...I'm debating whether an anime Go gallery might be a nice thread to start.

SGT Frog, Episode 67....Kerero is trying to develop a video game that will make a huge enough profit to just buy the Earth instead of conquering it. He uses a machine to visualize each of the characters' ideas of the ultimate game. Here, Dororo the ninja tries out the device. (He always was my favorite invader. ^^ ) It seems several of Black's stones are concealed by some ninja invisibility shield or alien frog cloaking device.

Negima! Episode 20 (-ish)
A call for help from Negi interrupts this game between Evangeline and the school dean. Behind Eva, Chachamaru is probably either feeling the pain of the black stone played on line 1, or wondering where they got a 19x13 goban from.

You may have looked away from the screen for five seconds and missed it. XD It was a brief scene.

Or I might have watched it before Hikaru no Go, then I would have had no idea that this was an actual game.

I haven't seen it for quite a while, but I noticed something on Sensei's Library a couple of weeks ago saying that Genma Saotome cheats at Go. :D Any idea what episode(s)?

Yesterday I myself was sighted :-)

An old, grey haired Asian man was standing next to me on the subway, and I could tell he was paying attention to the game of Go I was playing on my phone. He took a seat and produced his phone out of his pocket. Ten minutes later I looked down and noticed he was playing Go, too :-)

No clue. All I remember is one of them asking for a takeback, and the other said "No takebacks!". A few moves later, the guy who refused a takeback himself started begging to take a move back. Funny and good natured show :-)

http://grantland.com/features/man-vs-machine/

"The defensive record is largely due to Javier Mascherano, who’s been a Go master when closing down attackers and a direwolf after reaching them."

I think this is a well done metaphor that shows at least a basic understanding of the game.

"Go master" also conveniently linked to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(board_game) in case anyone didn't get it :)

I was at my favourite Dumplings place in this town (if you ever is in Stockholm it's called Fang Yuan Shi Wu) and was playing SmartGo Kifu on the iPad while waiting for food. One of the two Chinese women came with the food, and they always joke around with there customers etc, so she noticed and said she loved that game but it was hard. And then I heard her speak Chinese with another customer and the one word I did recognize was Weiqi. Should have tried to get a game with her.

Not really a mainstream go sighting I guess.
