Idea with Fischer is that you do not never need go to close to zero. That is why Fischer is completely different time keeping system, where you can always use almost all of your time, but still you never need to go short on time, because you can keep 10 minutes or even more for buffer.Sverre wrote:I get distracted when my clock is close to 0, no matter what timing system it used. I doubt Fischer timing would help much.
How quick do you play relative to your opponent?

Re: How quick do you play relative to your opponent?
I have been playing for 36 years, I have played tens of thousands of games including many thousand slow, serious games. Go is now a relaxation for me, just like some people do sudoku. I no longer have and desire to study the game as I am unlikely to ever get above my current 5 dan rank and there are many more things in life which I enjoy and which are also fun and require my study time. If I had to spend more than about 30 minutes on a game then I would just do something else which is more interesting to me. So, when I want to relax I play a quick game and enjoy it. I consider that to be having fun.RedStick wrote:I pulled DrStarw's quote here but it could have been any number of others.DrStraw wrote:I play go for fun. I have better thing to utilize my time on... I'm confused by this notion of fun=fast.
I play go for fun, think there are more important things etc...
yes, go is a game.
I will sometimes play fast games but I do not find them nearly as fun as slow ones.
Does playing slow games make go less fun for some people? what is it? do you get bored? Does the game not offer you enough to think about? Or are you just busy busy people who feel guilty for being away from your serious lives?
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Thanks. This makes sense. Apologies if my tone was snarky. I was just trying to push back on the idea that taking one's time with a game implies they aren't having fun, are taking it too seriously, or something else to that effect.DrStraw wrote:I have been playing for 36 years, I have played tens of thousands of games including many thousand slow, serious games. I always play slow. Usually at the yose my oppnent is leading me with 20 - 25 minutes. That's because I read my every single move and usually the others are just trying to scare you by playing fast.

Re: How quick do you play relative to your opponent?
I pretty much always use all of my time in games. I'm kinda thick though so it takes me a while to read things out.
I do not pay to much attention to my opponents time so I do not know if they take the same time or not.
