Thanks for the detailed profile, macelee.

Yes. He suffered a surprise defeat earlier this year, losing to Yu Zhiying (now considered one of the strongest female players in the world) in the Chinese Xinren Wang final. However, just a few days ago, he won six games in a row to win the Chinese CCTV tournament (keep an eye on him in the coming Asian TV cup).

Folks from the US and Canada should be happy that Gansheng Shi managed to win against Joanne Missingham.

I dithered for a while trying to figure out which name to use.

I saw one comment that since she's Oceania's rep, she was introduced as Joanne Missingham. Everyone knows both names now in that community though.
Here is a post from Mimura Tomoyasu of the event reception.

BTW, China is hosting a separate world new star tournament. The top 4 finishers in GLOBIS Cup have guaranteed seats in the top 16 of that event. The remaining 12 are decided via two preliminary tournaments.
