Hello from Dallas, Texas!

Hello!

I'm new to playing Go; 5 weeks, total, on Thursday.

I got into Go because I write fiction (hopefully soon my agent will sell my book). I started writing a new novel, and, well, Go became a central factor. I thought if I was writing a book that had the game in it, I'd better learn how to play.

So here I am, 5 weeks later. Playing Go instead of writing. Instead of eating. Instead of breathing. Maybe not the wisest idea I've ever had, huh?

what influenced you to include Go in your book if you didn't know how to play?

I was familiar with the basic rules of the game from a long time ago.

The novel is set in Ancient China (or a place verymuch like it) , and the original intent was to bring my experiences reading ancient philosophical documents and practicing Taijiquan and Qigong to the forefront. At first the game was window-dressing, but as I touched on more and more concepts, such as Dao, Yin and Yang, Steel Wrapped in Cotton, the game seemed to come more and more to the fore as a natural metaphor.

I mostly started playing Go to "get it right". Now that I've been playing it (and obsessed with it), I want to work it into an even more prominent position in the work. It'll be a trick, though. We'll see if I can pull it off!

(edit) We'll also see if I can stop playing/researching Go long enough to ever write again.

Hey, Kevin, it's Sam! The new guy that Scott does teaching games with.

If you don't remember me, it's okay, I know we newbies all look alike ;)
