Help on a problem from the book Tesuji

A couple of months ago I took up the task of giving the subreddit Tsumego Daily in my own little way of contributing to the community and growing myself as well. I play at about a 7k strength so I wouldn't say that I'm the most qualified but I'm the one took the step so I try to do my best.

Needless to say I don't always have accurate answers for the problems I put up. Sometimes I choose them because they're interesting or give me trouble instead of always choosing problems I know front to back. For today's problem I chose one from Tesuji Page 81 Problem 3 from the Safety Plays sub-chapter.

This is the problem: http://eidogo.com/#3KnzPxAnL:0,0

This is the book answer: http://eidogo.com/#3f8I1LwIt:0,0

The book says to solve for white so that White "wins for sure"

The problem I'm having is with this black response: http://eidogo.com/#yg7DHH4e:0,0

I can't for the life of me (and neither can anyone else in the thread) find anything but ko at best for white after black plays there. I would say I guess ko is the answer except the book says "white wins for sure" and also the answer the book gives doesn't even offer a consideration for that black move.

isnt that "book answer" dead? (only one eye)

as for the black response, if you want to transition into the book answer you can do this

Both of those answers I've come to but it ends up coming to a dead group with one eye no matter which way I try that. Because of transitioning into the book answer following the black move you end up without the ability to build a second eye:

But this is the problem from page 81 of Tesuji. The solution diagram is a misprint?! :blackeye:

This is an Internet discussion forum. Why would we spoil things by doing that? :) Anyway my copy is the first edition with different diagrams on pages 81 and 82. From RGG it seems like later editions may have 'fixed' the mismatch by changing the original problem to match the incorrect solution?

Why does the errata entry give no indication of the ko solution resulting from a hane at the 2-1?

The problem statement is for White to 'win for sure'. So ko is a failure (in the correct problem).

I overlooked that your post included two extra stones stretching up.
Indeed, this is the original diagram in the first printing of the Ishi Press edition. This one seems solvable with the suggested solution (assuming the solution keeps the two extra stones).

But those two extra stones are still missing in the solution on the next page of that same edition.

In the later Kiseido editions (I've checked 5th, 7th and 8th printings) have the same "wrong" solution as well as the "wrong" problem, as originally posted here in this thread. Looks like they tried to "correct" the wrong diagram.

I've updated the Errata page on Sensei's

Thank you very much :) Must be a misprint then from what it looks like. My book has 1 fewer stones extending along the top lol
