Questions on the opening

Hello,

I played this game yesterday. I have questions generally on how the first 50 moves or so went. Specifically, what was black 5 aiming at? It was unusual to me.

Also, any advice or comments on the corner invasion on move 96? How was the timing, should black tenuki, and did white get the best result.

However, feel free to comment on whatever you like. Any advice is much appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi Drew,

:b5: No problem. Just play your normal moves.

:w16: Just reply happily at C17.

:b29: Bad shape for B...

:w30: ...but you missed it. First feeling is E14.
Please see Toothpaste and related pages .

:b33: You let B fix his shape and connect so nicely.

:w56: Can you find a better local move ?

Thank you for the review. The "toothpaste" link is especially helpful, as I make that mistake often (on both sides).

Should :w56: be at S18? Could I have tenuki-ed there?

Hi Drew,

S18 is the correct local shape for :w56: --
you can verify for yourself S18 works here.
( It doesn't work in some other, different, corner cases. :) )

Whether to tenuki is a more tricky question.
It has to do with the fight between the two groups there:
your W Q11 group, and B's Q13 group, and how it affects the game globally.

The question on :w56: was only about the local reply, S18 hane. :)
