Here are the sgf files of the games. Since the characters are not displayed correctly I am not sure who's the winner in each case. If I read it correctly, entry 938 on this website suggests Eric Lui and Artem Kachanovsky lost, while Gansheng Shi and Mateusz Szurma won.

Classic Mateusz, making loads of weak groups and then killing you back when you try too hard to kill his almost dead group. Nice grappling hook tesuji for 92 too.

Ah, I haven't really looked at the games yet but this seems like an interesting skill to have
And what do you think of game 3 (Gansheng Shi vs. Arai Miyu), did she blunder in the endgame or was it a way to make the loss clear (the game looks quite close to me though)?

I just noticed, there's an American in the kansai Kiin, Francis Mayer? 1d. Does anyone know about him?
Honestly I was pleasantly surprised that western pros had two wins. But then I realized, the two wins were against female pros. Which is still impressive, but...

He is one of a few 1p in Kansai Kiin who are "studying pros". They need to get enough wins to be normal pros.

Never heard the term "studying pro". What exactly does that mean if they are not normal pros?

I've been somewhat curious too. One of the pros who came to visit the US Go Congress recently got "promoted" to normal 1p after x number of wins.

Yes, but it means currently no longer insei. Francis was but became too old.

I seem to recall Francis Meyer's mother is Japanese and father American which explains living in both countries. He came second in the 2010 US Open losing only to Myungwan Kim 9p (though I think his wins were against the usual top US amateurs rather than the young Chinese low dan pros at university common now).

Had a closer look at Artem's game. It seems to me (fwiw) that black never really had a chance after white settled his H16 group. and are typically the kind of moves I'd never play since it seems like white will be cut into pieces. But magically white links all his stones and develops the right side... and , leaving aji, are interesting. White made good use of the aji later, starting with 176.
