If somebody has too few pockets, he can dispose his phone to the hands of the organisers. OTOH, this reminds me of the organiser collecting our luggage, then forgetting the key of the luggage room, preventing access to clothes during the night. Again we see a necessity for good organisation and rules set before the tournament and then enforced during it.

A quick summary:

The alleged go player, an almost unknown amateur player, was playing in a major Chinese amateur tournament. He beat Hu Yuqing (former WAGC champion and one of the very top Chinese amateur players) almost effortlessly. He had this phone in his pocket with its camera facing outwards. He was said to have an earphone placed on the table and used a fan in a strange way. He played at even speed regardless of the situation. His moves matched 95% of those provided by Leela Zero on an ordinary hardware; after the 60th move, all his subsequent moves match completely to those played by Leela Zero on high-end hardware (not sure what exactly that was). According to observers (quite strong players) he played some very good moves. He then played several very conservative moves when he was in a comfortable lead.

He was playing a second game when everyone was asked to hand in their phones. After that, his playing level was said to have deteriorated. He then abandoned the whole tournament. He explained to media that he was uncomfortable being surrounded by observers due to his mental illness.

Interesting... I wonder how he could have gotten feedback from the phone if it were in his pocket the whole time.

Maybe some vibration alarm code?

Morse code ? Seems too complicated and error prone;
must be a much simpler solution...
a wireless hidden ear piece ? maybe others didn't notice...

Yes, quite possible … it seems too ostentatious that the earphone was placed on the table.

Some people say that computers help us solve problems we wouldn’t have if we didn’t have computers.

And when I instructed print media trainees I got into the habit of saying “I hate all computers”, “all computers are assh•les”, and “one day I’m a-gonna shoot all computers”, only to comfort my students, many of which were afraid of computers :roll:

maybe i should give the context that i majored in computer science in undergrad, majored in computer science again in grad school, and make a living as a software engineer by profession.

nonetheless, i'll stand by my original statement ;-)

One way I could think would involve somebody else observing the board position through the phone's camera (pointed towards the board, right?), then entering the moves into Leela in another location, then transmitting the responses back to the player. Details can be worked out.

There are other ways too, I think.

How many of Hu Yuqing's moves matched Leela Zero?

As a theoretical consideration: a speaker deeply implanted in the ear.
