Life In 19x19

The thirty-third Australian National Go Championships will be played on Saturday the twenty-seventh and Sunday the twenty-eighth of November, 2010. The venue will be the Young Go Academy in Strathfield, Sydney. The organisers are Robert Vadas of Sydney Go Club (ravadas@yahoo.com) and An Younggil of the Academy (anyoungkil@gmail.com). Third dans and stronger will play in the open division, second dans and under will play in the handicap division.

To register, contact one of the organisers with your name, rank, club, and AGA membership number if you have one, or ask your club secretary to pass the information along. The tournament fee (to be announced, but around $55) will be collected on the Saturday. As always, you must be a member of your national go association to compete in this tournament; for most of you that means the Australian Go Association, who will be happy to sign you up on the day if need be. The annual general meeting of the Australian Go Association will be on the Saturday evening.

Korean lunch and refreshments, tea, coffee and wireless internet will be provided. We will try to broadcast the open division on EurogoTV, and there will be liveblogging.

This is kinda strange, so far, I don't know it exists any national go association for Amateurs in China, not to say to be a member.

The [sl=ChinaWeiqiAssociation]Zhongguo Qiyuan[/sl] also covers strong amateurs, which I think is odd but plausible.

If you're living and playing in Australia, we're perfectly happy for you to join the [sl=AustralianGoAssociation]Australian Go Association[/sl]. But expatriates from the American Go Association, the Nihon Kiin, KABA or the EGF shouldn't really be forced to join a second association just to play in a tournament...

Is Joanne Missingham going? It would be encouraging to see a local pro

Wow, does everyone below 3 dan have to play a full handicap tournament? That would hugely reduce my motivation, it's so much more satisfying to beat somebody in an even game... I personally feel that handicap games are for learning and fun, and even games are for competition (and learning through that, of course). Then again, I am not in Australia, so I really shouldn't be saying too much .

Most years it's everyone below one dan, but this year they decided to be...different.

No, just three Korean professionals and one invited over from Japan.

The dates overlap with the 2010 Asian Games in which JM is taking part, representing Chinese Taipei, though I don't know exactly when the weiqi events are scheduled.

Yes, yes, and yes. But I only got home from Sydney this evening. Posting later, after I've finished laundering the bloodstains out.
