Espied this floor goban set on US eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Go-th ... rk:18:pf:0, and thought the wood grain pattern was very interesting.

Too distracting for me, but to each his own.

Hi,
I saw that there is no heso (pyramidal cavity) under the goban.

Anyone know if it is a must for all japanese floor goban or if there are cases where it is not to be expected?

btw the goban wood texture is really unexpected and particular, but I remember from Kuroki Go Ishi shop that special wood are used sometimes.

The board looks like Katsura to me. It usually doesn't have a grain pattern like that, but the color is right.

On small floor boards (the ones that could be converted easily to a table board) I usually don't see the pyramid cavity.

Looks like this auction ended without a bid. I am with Ed - such a board would be too distracting for me during play.

As an aside, the bowls/stones themselves that were part of the auction seemed quite nice. I am surprised at how often vintage boards are offered on eBay, with pretty nice bowls/stones discussed almost as an "oh by the way, they come with these too."
