I'm familiar with the 2002 Japanese one, but has anything been done since? If so, what are the numbers?

Huh? A "go census"? Does that mean all go players in the world need to register with their passports? I'm confused...

I'm not sure exactly how it was done, but here is an old
article by John Fairbairn about it. The article also has a link to the census' page, but it is in Japanese of course. Edit: sorry the link to the study on that page doesn't work anymore. Here's a
newer one.

Is that 50,000 UK people? I'm somewhat suspicious

greatly depends who precisely is counted. Czechia has listed 3000, which is high above number of active (or even tournament-active) players, but i vaguely remember such a figure as being number of people who know the rules. i have no idea how good an estimate it is and if the same criterion applies to the other rows

If you compare with
http://europeangodatabase.eu/EGD/Stats_Country.php the number of people in the EGF database from Czechia and the UK is about the same, while the census lists them with over an order of magnitude difference.
The census also claims both Finland and Norway have about 500 players each. For Finland I think that number may actually be a little low, but I wonder where in Norway those other 450 go players are hiding...

See John's remark (
http://web.archive.org/web/201105122106 ... ensus.html), and note that something between 1 and 10% (depending on the country of origin) of the 500k CJK population will count as being able to play Go.]
Hmm..just realized that those numbers are based on the corresponding numbers for CJK--I have no idea what the prevalence of go playing is among second generation East Asians.
