When shopping for Halloween candy this morning, I picked out choices that were considered "premium" when I was a kid, e.g. Reese's peanut butter cups, Snickers, the Wonka contingent, etc. But now I'm worried that the candy that was cool when I was a kid is no longer cool. When I was a kid, there were a lot of old people that gave out crappy candy, like those terrible orange and black taffy things. I don't think you can even get those any more; all the people who grew up actually liking them have finally kicked the bucket.

I just don't want to be in a situation where kids are like "aw man, freaking bottlecaps! Let's TP this guy."

Bottlecaps are awesome.

You could always do what we did: move to the country. Our driveway is almost a quarter of a mile long and totally dark, our nearest neighbor is a third of a mile away, and the nearest child of an age to go trick or trewating is so far away I have no idea where. We have not had to worry about Halloween candy for ten years.

Agreed. It is also very steep and it is an absolute horror to have to walk up it in the dark when there is too much snow on it to be able to drive up. We also have a lot of crows in our woods and they often flock as in horror movies. Plus the occasional bat.

Sounds like where I live, except that I'm also next to several hundred acres of state forest owned by the State of New York. I'd be more likely to have deer and turkey showing up on my front yard than children.

Have those two. Plus all the usual: bobcats and foxes on down. Never seen a coyote on our land but I hear them in the distance frequently at night. And there have been reports of mountain lions in the county.

I'm in the same position, I bought Halloween candy I remember liking as a kid........but it would appear that no one in our neighborhood wanted to trick or treat.....so now my roommates and I just have this bowl of candy...

Man, I only had one trick-or-treater all night, and now I'm all pukey from snacking on all this leftover candy. I haven't even had that much. How did we consume so much sugar as a kid without dying?

I remember making myself sick on candy at my grandma's house when I was 12. So I think it was an issue back then too.

I can't imagine the stuff you said would ever become unpopular, and I'd add reese's peanut butter cups.

Those are Good 'n Plenty, and they're great! I'm not *that* old, am I?

We had lots of kids and assorted candy. The twix and the reese's peanut butter cups went the fastest. Probably the snickers and the mounds were the slowest to go. So apparently your reese's will save you from TP.

No, not Good 'n Plenty. I'm talking about that horrible molasses and peanut butter taffy that comes in orange and black wax wrappers.

Apparently, according to the Google, they're "Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses". Here's the kicker - they're made by Necco, the makers of those horrible Necco wafer heart things. Looks like they got the market cornered on the worst holiday candies. I've bet they've got a patented method for introducing bubbles into candy canes so they slice up your mouth.

Oh I know what you are talking about.... They are wrapped like the salt water taffy.... but they so are not taffy...I don't know what it is... worst holloween candy disappointment ever....

Bottlecaps do rock.

And Reeses' are a close second.

No kids came by this year though I would have thought it would have been near perfect conditions: Sunday, warm (high in mid-60s that day), DST hasn't kicked in yet, etc.

Maybe my GOM membership has been outed...

Mary Janes are good! It's just peanut butter taffy.
Necco wafers are gross, as are Smarties. I used to like both as a kid.

I say anything with chocolate is a crowd pleaser (except almond joy/mounds which many don't like).

My favorite main-stream candies are Twix & Milky-way. (I like caramel. My wife does not!!)
