Masterpiece of attack and defense

Post by Bill Spight »

Here is a cool game in which Black carries on a sustained, very skillful attack over the whole board, dictating the pace of the game. Despite that, the game is considered a masterpiece for White. Even so, Black won the game. By one point. But Black took two stones. A handicap that everyone considered to be too big, because Black was underrated.

I have added several comments, but I do not pretend to understand play at this level. The comments are on the level of sports commentary. ;)

Enjoy!

It strikes me that to plan the top left black would have had to have advance knowledge of how many free moves he will be getting with his right side strength.
So you've got an eye?
That don't impress me much

I think I have a new game to add to my all-time favorites list.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.

Oh, very nice! I thought I had some specific questions, but on viewing it a second time, I find I do not-- or rather, the only questions I can think of, like "are those stones really dead?" or "Does that really make a second eye?" answer themselves fairly soon. It's so nice having comments like this to bring my attention to points I might have missed, or alternate plays I wouldn't have thought of.

Genjo and Chitoku, two 8-dan rivals for the position of Meijin Godokoro, each recognizing that the other was equally deserving of the promotion, neither would accept promotion. Great rivals in their careers, they produced many wonderful games that fans of the present one might enjoy.
