1979 Go Article - in New Scientist

I came across this issue of New Scientist. They went with Go as the cover picture and there's an article about Go by a David Brown (?) and Stuart Dowsey, co-founder of Ishi Press and sponsor of the London Go Centre ( http://senseis.xmp.net/?LondonGoCentre ). There's also a photo with two unnamed players to guess..

I place all guilt about copyright issues at the door of Google books who digitised it.

personal trivia: this is the same month I was born (sorry old(er) people)

Very nice that this is available online.
It's cute that they printed the photo of the pro game sideways (should be rotated by 90 degrees)
on page 304 where they also mentioned Bruce Wilcox.
I was hoping to find an Apple ][ ad in that issue, but didn't see it. :)

The player in the photo is Stuart Dowsey. No idea who the woman is.

I would be able to sit like that for 5 minutes before my knees exploded.

The photo was taken in Japan, I think, and used for publicity purposes.

When I first lived in Japan I found a little Go club, above a noodle shop, near my flat and I became the sole foreigner there. There was only enough room for 6 boards and I had to learn to kneel or sit cross-legged to play. For the first 6 months I could hardly walk after an evening's play, until my knees got used to it.

Best wishes.

When I tried to sit on my knees like that I got a pinched meniscus which caused my knee to swell up and put me on crutches for a few weeks  . That was the last and final time I tried that. This sitting posture is another reason pros usually have to start young

The photo caption states that it was taken at "Tokyo Restaurant", Swallow Street, London.

That would make sense because Dowsey had been back in the UK for several years in 1979 when the article was written.
