I was wondering about how to respond to this move by white, i've been seeing this play a lot in my handi games that i've been playing.

I've been doing this for the time being, but i'm unsure of the result

After the move you post, the result will probably still not be bad for black, but you can get a lot better. White's move is not very good, because you can seal him in the corner in a very painful way:
$$
$$ --------------
$$ | . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . .
$$ | . . . W 1 .
$$ | . . . 2 X .
$$ | . . 4 3 . .
$$ | . . 5 . . .
$$ | . . . . . .

$$ | . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . .
$$ | . . . W 1 .
$$ | . . . 2 X .
$$ | . . 4 3 . .
$$ | . . 5 . . .
$$ | . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . .[/go]
After this, I have no idea what white is supposed to do next. Whatever he plays, his corner will become much too small, and black's outside thickness will be much, much more valuable. Long live the double hane - when it's possible, it's usually a very strong move

.

ah, thank you. i didn't really consider playing in that direction, but that looks much much better than the results i've been getting.

I like this, too.

Here are several variations, with a number of mistakes. Probably not all of them are intentional.
