Lots of heated debate has been happening in this little community lately, and while I'm still relatively new here (at least on lifein19x19) maybe the level of discourse can be a tad more civil.

From what I've seen everyone has been pretty civil so far. Disagreeing with someone is very different from being uncivil with them, and besides, robust debates are fun.
For example, RJ's debate about sportsmanship has changed my views on sporting behaviour. I disagree with him even more strongly than I did before (apologies Robert), but I definitely have changed my views so it's been a learning experience.

Hmm, I haven't been paying attention here lately, so I don't know what the "heated debate" is that you speak of... however....
You did link to my favorite xkcd ever... so I thought I would reply

I think it has become some kind of a running joke in pretty much any geekish (and some not-so-geekish) communities.
Each time I receive a silly e-mail at work, I'll say "Someone is wrong on the intranet."
