I tried signing on tonight at 18:00 UK time up to 21:00, without success. Is KGS down?
Best wishes.

That is funny, because I just tried, at 21:35, with my normal program and via the KGS page, and each time I got the message that the server was refusing connections, please try later.
Best wishes.

Its not that I'm paranoid, just that the system is out to get me!
Best wishes.

i've noticed that cgoban says "kgs refusing connections, the server is probably down" even when the problem is, say, that you aren't connected to the internet.

I just tried and was able to connect immediately. I think if TMark were not connected to the internet, he wouldn't be able to post here.

If I were having trouble connecting, I would do the following:
1) try to log in using a guest account
2) try to ping the server using ip address rather than dns name. The results of this test can tell you if your name server has a problem.
ping 74.52.20.162
vs.
ping gokgs.com
3) run a "trace route" to see where the connection is failing. With a little voodoo, this test can tell you if cables are broken under the ocean, or if your traffic is being filtered by someone.
On windows that would mean opening a command line and running:
tracert gokgs.com
On linux (and probably mac OS X)
traceroute gokgs.com
The command prints a list of all computers your internet traffic is visiting between where you are now and the server you are trying to talk to. If you feel compelled to post the results of a trace route, censor the first 1-3 lines of results as you probably prefer these values stay private if possible.

The ISP sent me a message yesterday that may be pertinent:
Window Start Date & Time (24h CST/CDT): Thursday Jan 20, 2011 00:00
Window End Date & Time (24h CST/CDT): Thursday Jan 20, 2011 05:00
Department: Networking
Change Activity Details: ***CORRECTION*** Please disregard the previous message that referenced 'Outage Notification' There is no outage event, this is a maintenance notice. We will be performing configuration updates to increase the stability of our network based on vendor recommendations. During this work, we will be gracefully taking one border router out of service at-a-time, applying changes, and then restoring normal service.
My guess is that their upgrades weren't as "graceful" as they were hoping. That happens often when they do something like this. Hopefully it will be over soon, TMark if you still have trouble in a day I'll look into it.
The "CORRECTION" is because earlier they sent an email with exactly the same information, but the wrong form letter was used, so it called it an outage notification instead of a maintenance notice. Oops.

Many thanks, I have just tried this morning and was able to connect immediately. For those doubters among you, I was using the downloaded client and when that did not work I switched to using the webpage applet, and I tried to use my own account and as a guest. All the trace stuff is a bit too techie for me.
Best wishes.
