I'm back

I finally seem to be playing go regularly again, at least on DGS.

All my games lately have followed a pretty consistent theme, whether I won or lost. Part of it is sloppyness from rust, but a lot of it is obviously my psychological state. I always thought the proverb about "when the maid came by with tea" was hyperbolic and pretentious, but in turn I really can see when I made a move too early in the morning, or when I was frustrated at work, or when I'd had a few beers.

And then there was this game, which by the end, brought back the excitement. First, some music to set the mood (hat-tip: Day[9]):

This game follows the exact theme of all my games lately; violent, reckless, sloppy, chaotic, complicated... But I get pretty focused near the end.

I had read out that I would lose the ko fight, and the game. Realizing that, I almost resigned, but then decided to play it out and make my opponent prove it. It was still complicated, and if he made a mistake, I wouldn't have any trouble accepting the win.

Actually, on second thought, I still feel bad.

For :w178:, I'm pretty sure you can just play J18. When black cuts, he will capture your main group of stones, but you will capture 6 of his, and you would win the game.

Or, once the ko fight starts, you can just start a double ko by playing B15. Black will only be able to win one, and you win comfortably.

It didn't occur to me to used that for a double-ko; I just thought I had a one large ko threat there.

Re: :w178:, there's a liberty problem on the K13 group. If I try to capture the M17 stones, the K13 group will get captured, and I'll lose the capturing race on the left side.

There's a lot of possibilities, but I don't think any work for me, and I don't think I can win if I lose that left side dango group. The cut at E11 doesn't work.

Hmm, you would have this, but now we're just back to ko territory again. You'd have first capture, and you would have stuff like 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e' as ko threats. Not great though, so I guess your move in the game was better. Also, this is definitely not something I would likely be able to read out in an online game.

Well, this was on a turn-based server, so I did have some opportunities to read deeply, but I usually don't read any deeper than I would in a real-time game. Regardless, I would never have seen that ko; just seeing the liberty problem in the middle was stretching my ability.

At :w180: I considered O11 instead, threatening to cut off the tail of the black dragon, but if he doesn't connect and moves to take one of the open corners of the eye instead, I don't think I could win the resulting capturing race.

Before dinner, I played the song and single-stepped through the game...

After dinner I thought I would code but listen to the song again...

I am remembering your game as the song plays...

That is WEIRD.

Q17 like that is rather rarely a good move. Especially considering this was already a frameworky game, clinging to points there seems to miss the point.

Proverb you already know time

"Play lightly when reducing a large moyo"

You consented to a competing moyo game of some description, so I think that's especially relevant. You just need him to have less points, not no points. I have trouble with this too.

Reducing lightly <------|-> Fighting next to his thickness
Move that bar to the left.

Q17? I played white this game.
