Kiseido announced awhile back that it (John Power, I think) was translating a recent Japanese joseki dictionary. Winter was the originally-estimated publication date, but I think that was pushed to spring. Does anyone know anything more?

I'm waiting for it, too.

On 18 February 2011 John Power said to me re this book:

I'm on the home stretch in the first volume. Since I am making the diagrams it's been very
time-consuming and I lost the summer holidays last year with my London/Dublin trip.

He's also extra busy at the moment with his day job.

There are to be three volumes, right? In that case, we're quite a ways away from publication...

It will be worth the wait judging from his other excellent translations. I can wait because I never learned all there was in the Ishida dictionary

I think I remember reading that it would be two volumes--I'm trying to recall where I saw that.

The Japanese edition is two volumes.

I'm dong the new version of the joseki dictionary in GW format, thanks to which we can put it into two volumes and make the diagrams a little larger than the tiny ones in Ishida's DBJ.

The book's not really late from JP's point of view. I gather Richard had to pluck a date out of the air for his e-journal ad. The one he grasped was just a bit optimistic.

The german translation consists of three books.
Volume one is now available and has 299 pages. I think i am a little afraid of the english version. 500 pages in the japanese original --> 600 pages in the translation? And also a bigger format than the ishida format? ( That is a assumption from the last post. Unfortunatly i dont know the GW format... )

It seems that the books of the english translation will be not as portable as the Ishida edition.
As a german go player i am still not very familiar with the german go-language so i usually prefer an english book. But the portability of a book is more important for me.
In the winter an unhandy book like "Invincible" or "Kamakura" may be ok but not when the sun is shining (or i am travelling by bus or train).

Considering that he's creating diagrams and arranging them to fit a horizontal instead of vertical format, I can only imagine how time consuming it is.

Why do you say arranging horizontal instead of vertical? As far as I would assume, it's just page 1 is on the "wrong" side for English books.

Same over here. My go books are all in English except for one (a game collection commented by Young Sun Yun). And I have no intention to buy German go books if there are English books available with the same content. I'll wait for the English joseki dictionary.

Out of curiosity, who translated the German version?

I actually picked up "Sanrensei - Die Power Eröffnung", since the English original ("The Power of the Star Point") is OOP and I couldn't even find it on ebay. I also have "Die Mitte des Himmels" and Dickfeld's "Leben und Tod", both of which are quite excellent (although Davies' L&D book makes the latter somewhat redundant). But that's pretty much it. My other ~55 Go books are all in English, and I'd generally buy an English translation (from Japanese) over a German one. (But I am glad that the number of German books has increased in the past few years since I'm sure that there are numerous people who are not quite as comfortable with English as some of us here.)
