...update the menu of players requesting games when the first one goes away. So many times I post a game, someone replies, then goes away, and I forget to click the menu to see if there are others...

it was like that some years ago. i didn't like it, because quite often the instant i pressed ok, the player i wanted to play with was gone, leaving me with an opponent i didn't want.

Yeah, I have dim memories of something like that being the reason it is this way.

Perhaps a drop-down list is not the right form for displaying the challengers.

I agree with this statement. However, I don't have a particular design in mind.

Maybe the window could be bigger with a scrolling list instead?
