So, I just finished a Malkovich, and was exhausted/frayed from it, but then Kirby offered me a game, and I couldn't turn him down. There's something terribly wrong with me. =D I've been playing exclusively handicap games lately, so Kirby was kind enough to agree to an even game. I know it's presumptive of me, as I know my opponent's stronger than myself, but he sounded fine with it, so let's do it. Komi's 6.5, and comments are closed.

Sweet, I used to love playing 3-3 openings. I'm eager to see how yours develops. I'm tempted to play one of my own, but it's not necessarily in white's best interest to play too similarly to black, since black gets the initiative. Regardless, I blame this stone/opening on Topazg, who's been playing it against me too much lately.
Aside from seeing it lately and learning about it from getting stomped by it, I think that this is reasonable here. I can hit the top right star point for influence later, which goes well with this top, outward-facing stone. If he develops the 3-3 with something like O16 before I get there, I can take my own efficient enclosure. It doesn't make me necessarily more efficient, but at least that would keep up. And there are lots of fun options, like taishamess. Curious if my opponent will play cross or adjacent corners. As people tend to play more silly, unorthodox openings in Malkovich games (count the number of tengen openings: a handful out of only 120?), I bet my opponent will play diagonal in the bottom left. Regardless, either is fine with me.

This looks a bit like we're playing a standard game on a board with two shorter legs.

Interesting -- at least 3 pro games with this opening, from 2000, 1960, and 1933 (Go Seigen was B, Kitani Minoru was W).

If each corner gets something like the large avalanche with over 40 moves,
(probably not applicable here :)) we're looking at 160+ moves.

Okay, so I'm going a bit more for influence and my opponent is going for more direct territory. I do not yet know how to handle influence well, but I want to learn, so this is a good time to try to practice. It would not be unreasonable for my opponent to play a low approach on the left (C16), in which case, the taisha kind of appeals... I DO have the ladder.

On a side note, the cross positions seem a bit harder for an influence game, because I can't make quite as huge of a framework/position, but I don't think it'll be that big of a difference. If I can hit one of the two 4-4s on top of my opponent's stone, I'll have a hefty amount of central power, and will get to play as such.

If the top right was a 4-4 and was mine, I would play this high. The bottom left corner develops a bit slowly, so the bottom is a bit more boring, so there's no reason to pincer to mess with it.

Not a ton of comment here, sorry. I love this move, so I'm playing it because it seems reasonable. If I'm reading the right ladder, I have it, so it's not unsupported. I should probably not start huge fights while exhausted, but meh, I don't see any way this will turn out atrociously.
