Life In 19x19

This Tuesday, I will invade the strange land of....Chess players! I'll sneak into their meeting completely undetected as a Go player and learn their secrets. Then-

Nevermind. I ran out of cool things to say. In all seriousness though, I found out there's a chess club 1.5 miles from my house, so I thought I'd go check it out next Tuesday and see what it's like. Even though I live in the USA, I know next to nothing about Chess (awkward), but it could be something fun to do on the side. Perhaps it might even improve my situational thinking and thus improve my Go playing.

I tried playing online yesterday, and got destroyed by a low ranked opponent. Perhaps I can learn some things about establishing a club while I'm there and then I can further my local Go Club ambitions. Perhaps I'll also learn some teaching techniques I can use to help potential beginning players who join the club as well.

My plan for my Go club is to start it up once I start going to TCC this January. I suppose I'll see how all this stuff works out. As for the whole chess thing, it's weird how alien the game is to me despite the popularity it has in the west.

The only thing I had known about chess is its rule until I took a fundamental chess class in my university, I had no particular interest in chess at all (actually hated it) but applying chess mindset into Go improved my games a lot, especially local combat, so I guess you should give it a try

We've somehow ended up with a Chess Club at work during lunch time ... it's an odd feeling coming back to chess. I think I used be a stronger chess player (when I was on my High School Chess Team), but time has weathered my skill in that particular game.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with playing go at a chess club, and vice versa.

lol I was thinking of that. I'm not sure if the organizers would like that, but who knows. I planned to mention I'm more familiar with Go, so if they ask, I can show them my Go board. Perhaps I can convert one or two of them!

Thank you. And I agree. I don't know much about chess either other than I'm absolutely terrible according to the game I played the night before last. I did purchase a Chess board before, but only because it was Star Wars themed. I probably had one or two games on it. Let's just say capturing pieces with Darth Vader was very fun.

My brother was on the high school chess team. But it's still a strange game as far as I'm concerned. Feels too confined. I guess I'm just used to the freedom that Go provides. You don't exactly have that in chess.

The games are truly different. Some parallels can be drawn, of course, but I don't get the same experience from Chess that I do from Go, though I find I enjoy both thoroughly.

My Go clubs runs at the same time, in the same room as the chess club does. Without the chess club, we wouldn't even have a room to play ^^

Believe it or not, not everyone in the USA knows how to play chess. You've at least heard of it as most Americans have. As with getting better at Go by studying Chess, quite possibly, as both games employ similar thinking strategies.

All in all, Chess is a fairly complex game. The opening is, arguably, the most important part of the game, since good players know how to hold onto the first move advantage that white has at the beginning.

I wasn't trying to knock chess or anything. I was mostly trying to be humorous, but I have a tendency of failing in that department. However, I would definitely say my comedy skills are better than my Go skills. lol

I just don't have a lot of familiarity with the game personally. I've played a few games with my brother before, but that's about it. That's part of why I'm interested in going to this club meeting on Tuesday. If I like the atmosphere, I might go again since there are no Go clubs in the area yet.

That's lucky. I've heard a lot of success stories about establishing Go clubs in school settings and whatnot, so I'm at least hoping I can emulate that success at least partially. I'll be starting college this January, so that will present me with the perfect opportunity.

I was also trying to be humorous. Apparently, that was Internet typing humor fail. That wasn't your humor failing, it was mine.
