KGS is cool because...

Problems with escapers, the desire to have Fischer timing, problems with the TOS, problems with getting booted... We've seen a lot of debates around here and even back on GoDiscussions about problems that people have with KGS. But to only point out what you don't like about something seems a bit unfair. A lot of us use KGS on a regular basis, which in itself shows that KGS is a cool server.

What's your favorite part about KGS?

I'll go first.

KGS is cool because... of its novel reviewing tools.

+ cross platform (specifically, linux)
+ for the most part, I speak the language (English). There is a sense of community.
+ online game archive and rating graph are huge conveniences.
+ some day, I'll have the free time to participate in the monthly tournaments.
+ I don't know the details of how InternetGoSchool came to use KGS software for it's lesson archive, but clearly there was some cooperation there, and that's awesome.

Because it adds more social and friendly aspects. KGS is likely the only chat room this community will ever need. It's a great place to play, but you can also talk to people easily.

* Auto-Match (Start it and do something else until an opponent is found)
* Decent ranking system (Has it's flaws, but better than most others I've seen)
* Chat rooms (Biggest problem with those is that I can't set them to flashing so I notice new messages.)

Because over 95% of my tournament opponents are registered with KGS. I can play them if I like (unfortunately I haven't done this for the last few months..)

Because of the community; almost everyone I know who plays go plays on KGS, and the people on KGS are generally friendly and helpful to beginners.

Because of the easy-to-learn interface. Most people can literally sit down and play immediately without any learning curve.

Because I can find a challenging game with a player of my own strength in minutes.

Because of the flexibility in timing systems and rule settings compared to every other server out there.

KGS is by far my favorite server because of these main reasons:

  • Largest Go Server for Westerners with broadcasting from major tournaments
  • THE place to meet my friends online
  • KGS Plus with group lessons from pros
  • Cool functionality for post-game-review
  • SGF editor with the best game tree
  • Automatch
  • Possibility to create own rooms
