Life in 19x19 Title Tournament
Posted: Tue May 18, 2010 11:54 am
Dear all,
Jordus had the excellent idea of a forum title tournament, and following some discussions, I'm putting forward the idea for comments, responses, and signups.
The idea in principle is that we have a double-elimination tournament (so one loss puts you in the losers bracket, another puts you out of the tournament) that is open to all, with stronger players entering in later rounds. The current format, if we can get 48 entrants, and courtesy of Herman's proposal in this thread is as follows:
Round 1 -> Group 1 play Group 2, winners progress, losers form the first 8 in the loser's bracket
Round 2 -> Winners play Group 3, winners progress, losers form the second 8 in the loser's bracket
Round 3a -> Winners play Group 4, winners progress, losers drop into the loser's bracket, to play...:
Round 3b -> The winners of the first round in the loser's bracket between the losers in the first two rounds. Losers in the loser's bracket are eliminated
Round 4a -> Winners play Group 5, winners progress, losers drop in the loser's bracket
Round 4b -> 2nd Loser's bracket round, winners stay in, losers are eliminated
Round 5a -> Winners play Group 6, winners progress to the final 8, losers drop in the loser's bracket
Round 5b -> 3nd Loser's bracket round, winners stay in, losers are eliminated
Round 5c -> 16 player's in the loser's bracket, 8 get eliminated
Round 6a -> Final 8 for the winner's bracket, 4 go through, 4 drop
Round 6b -> Loser's bracket - 8 winners from 5c play, 4 get eliminated
Round 6c -> Loser's bracket - 4 winners from 6b play the 4 losers from 6a, 4 get eliminated
Round 7a -> Final 4 for the winner's bracket, 2 go through, 2 drop
Round 7b -> Loser's bracket - 4 winners from 6c play, 2 get eliminated
Round 7c -> Loser's bracket - 2 winners from 7b play the 2 losers from 7a, 2 get eliminated
Round 8a -> Final 2 for the winner's bracket, 1 goes through to the grand final, 1 drops
Round 8b -> Loser's bracket - 2 winners from 7c play, 1 gets eliminated
Round 8c -> Loser's bracket - winner from 8b plays loser from 8a, winner progresses to the grand final at a 1-0 disadvantage
Round 9 -> First to 2 wins between the winner of 8a and the winner of 8c, with the winner of 8a starting with 1 win at 1-0.
This way everyone technically has a chance of winning the whole tournament, but no-one should end up playing people far out of their ability range (unless they do really really well!)
It's possible to play a grand total of 14 games (win round 1, lose round 2, win 3b, 4b, 5b, 5c, 6b, 6c, 7b, 7c, 8b, 8c, and then the first game in round 9), but it's pretty unlikely!
So, firstly, who's interested in the tournament, and secondly, please can you place votes on the time controls that suit you best. There's 7 options for time controls, and a corresponding "not this one" set of options for people who simply wouldn't participate if the time controls were that long or short. The format is {initial time} + {stones}/{minutes} canadian overtime. Obviously byo-yomi is possible too, but it was to get a feel for time preferences.
