who should be Admins and moderators?

I think we should begin nominating Admins and Moderators.

Admins - Will have complete access to site (root directory, database, forum admin privledges) [the goal with nominating Admis is to have more than one person with control of the site so we don't end up with a "Don" issue like GD had.]

Moderators - Will have admin control within the forums. (Much like Joaz and Javaness did in GD.)

First we need to decide how many Admins and Moderators we want.

Second, we need to nominate who we think will be good in that position.

I nominate Fwiffo and Joaz for either position. Joaz worked hard on what he feared might be a sinking ship, and Fwiffo seems to be both technically capable and I know he's done similar leadership with his club.

My arbitrary suggestion:

3 Admins
3 Moderators

Feels like a good number for each. As the community grows, more Mods can be added.

Joaz is already here, and he seemed to be doing fine as a mod on GD. I suggest he keeps that position as mod.

Fwiffo seems to be interested in the technical side. Allow him Admin access, I think.

I think any of the ,oderators from the old forum would be excellent, including Joaz. I think kirkmc is another good choice for moderator if he joins us here.

I am willing to be an administrator, so long as there are others. I don't want to be the only one available when things go haywire (which is inevitable from time to time). I can't promise any particular amount of time over the long run, but I will help out where I can. I will do my best to set aside some time over the next week or two to get us in a state where people will feel like we're actually an improvement over godiscussions.com.

I have skills in all the technical areas necessary for improving the forum (HTML/CSS, PHP, Javascript, etc.), and specific stuff related to go (e.g. I wrote a wordpress plugin for EidoGo).

you should also consider admin/mods in multiple timezones

I'll continue to help out on the technical side if desired - it was a lot of fun to tackle the diagram issue. Of course, if there're too many people interested in the technical aspects of the forum, I'm OK with stepping down, too.

I'd volunteer for either. I have a decent amount of software experience though none in PHP and have been on the boards for a while.

I am nominating Joaz and Kirby(kirby is the one who got the diagrams running) as admins.

I'll get back later with more names.

I think we should have at least 4 admins who can give access to other uses to modify, repair the forums. The more people who have the info, the better a chance the community survives in the long run.

Personally, I'd like to see a moderator with a commitment to random acts of banning users and closing threads, just to keep us on our toes. ;)

Some of this (especially the decision on admins) may have to wait for these forums to get a little more established with more people. Of course at the same time, maybe everybody who gets over here sooner is going to have a higher commitment? Maybe? Heh, who knows. But I still stick with my original statement.

And like xed_over said, I would also highly agree with making sure we get some good timezone coverage.

Timezone coverage is an issue with the moderators. However, with the admins, as long as they are able to be contacted, timezone isn't as an important issue.

The admin function imo is to be able to give access to those who can do what needs to be done. Not necessarily be able to do it. Though if they could that is always a plus :D

That makes sense. Guess we have to have at least reasonable assumptions about response times in the (hopefully) rare cases of emergencies.

...even if we do want it to be back up in 10 seconds. ;)

I'm on the west coast, and tend to stay up late, so I'm GMT -8 or -9. Fwiffo is east coast( -5) , and I think that Kirby is central(-6). KirkMc is something around +1 or +2. That seems rather well distributed.

A good start. Add someone in Europe and someone in Asia/Australia and you have the world covered.

I agree with the suggestions. Also, anyone considering tealeaf?
