Strategy when playing south cross fuseki

I just saw a game that features the south cross fuseki in a game by breakfast.
Seems like an intresting idea. You can find the game here:

I wonder what would be the strategy here though.
How do you get your oponent to fight you and not just take teritory everywhere while you are left with nothing in the center ?
In my personal opinion the reason black lost mainly in this game (but i'm just an 11kyu and the real oponent was 4d so probably i'm wrong about this) was that black put a stone in the center which white could pressure the whole time while developing. But what if black does not leave weaknesses like this and instead just does not care about the center and starts developing the corners and the sides ?
Maybe you just have to be really good at invading for this strategy to work ?
I guess I'll have to try it but in the meantime if anyone has some ideas please share
Cheers,
Otenki
