I wouldn't be surprised if Sedol accepted it, because even though it is far below the 1,500,000 USD he'd announced as his minimum, he's recently(?) been speaking in hyperboles and then tempering some of them in future interviews.

This is great news. I hope BadukTV braodcasts it and we get a subtitled version from GoGameGuru!

This is great book-stuff as well.

All or nothing seems like a big gamble for a ten game match. I wonder if the players make deals behind the scenes. For instance, say that it is 5 games to 4. The players might agree to play for $300,000 and split the remaining $400,000, with the player who is ahead getting $300,000 and the player who is behind getting $100,000.
OC, such a deal would have to take place behind the scenes, to maintain the drama for the fans.

This
has to be a cultural thing (the all or nothing). Both for the players and the fans. I don't believe most folks here would see it as all that less dramatic were a prize of $700,000 divided $600,000 to the winner and $100,000 to the loser. Which is equivalent to each of the players being paid $100,000 to take part competing for a prize of $500,000.

I doubt it is cultural. Or, rather, it is a culture of one. Lee Sedol is an all-or-nothing type of guy. I suspect that he is considering accepting the lower than minimum prize because it matches his style. It may have even been one of his conditions.

According to this Chinese source:
http://weiqi.tom.com/2013-04-03/00UP/49771418.html, the idea is being discussed but at very early stage. May or may not happen.

I'm not one to use the term "epic" lightly, but this would be epic.

According to Oro article, Furniture company is sponsoring this match and total money involved is $1,300,000. So there may be game fee for each game.

If the 10 games are split 5-5, what is the prize money division?
Best wishes.

Not so exciting to me. Sounds more like a big bangneki than a serious go match, the money is the most important thing. I'd be more excited if they played with only a game fee and no big prize for the winner. BTW, what are the playing conditions? Time limits? Is it speed go? On line?

I understand the sponsor is the same that sponsors the Mlily Cup. The first game will be played in Kamakura, the exact location where the famous jubango between Kitani Minoru and Go Seigen was held. Games will start next year, played at a speed of one per month.

Why you don't want big prizes? Shouldn't they play more seriously when there's more on the line?.
