Downloaded Java 25, now I can't access IGS

Downloaded Java 25 on Win XP. Now I cannot access GoPanda1 (it just freezes) or GoPanda2 (can't connect). Has anyone else had this issue?

Gopanda 1 freezes on my machine as well, but Gopanda 2 doesn't use Java anymore, and is working. If you can't sign in, you might try re-registering with a different user name.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I registered a new account and re-downloaded the GoPanda2 client. Tried to log in: nothing.

Oh well. Maybe it's off to Tygem or something.

Okay, so I e-mailed the address on the GoPanda2 startup screen explaining the issue I've been having, OS I'm using, etc. So I'll see if anything comes of it. I really like IGS and want to go back to playing there if at all possible.

I recommend complaining about KGS.

For windows users there's also this ancient looking thing:
http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/pandaegg.html

I find it cute, but didn't like that you have to double click to place a stone (first click places an "are you sure you want to play here?"-marker and second click places the actual stone. I didn't know how to change this behaviour). Also the chatting functionality is kind of clunky.

Then there's qgo, which according to senseis can also be downloaded for windows (I did not know that previously). So you might want to google that.

It's not that I dislike KGS, but for some reason I like IGS more. Granted, I greatly prefer playing in person, but that's not much of an option at the moment.

As for the other suggestions, thank you. I'll try them out this weekend.

I was just joking because of the many and various complaints about KGS, Java or KGS and Java.

Actually, it sounds silly, but having the stone sound on IGS is something I really like about it and miss on KGS. Plus, it seems like IGS sometimes has a larger variety of higher ranks. So when I don't have time to play a game, I can watch some 7 or 8 dans playing with greater regularity than with KGS.

Of course, none of that matters if I can't connect to IGS at all.

Two weeks after I e-mailed and no response. Still can't connect on GP2 or use GP1. Tried the Panda Egg, but couldn't connect there either. I'm out. It's back to KGS for me.

Hm, I never had problems with panda egg (but like you I can't connect using gp2). Weird.

Maybe open a console and login via telnet? Perhaps your password is simply wrong or something.

To connect via telnet, open a console (like bash under *nix, cmd.exe under xp. Don't ask me what it's called under win7) and type

Code: Select all

telnet igs.joyjoy.net 7777

(I assume here that telnet will be installed, which is ihmo reasonable.)

It'll ask you to login, so type in your name and after that your password. Do you get an error message or do you see the squirrel? (That's an awesome sentence, btw)

The message I got was that my password is not allowed. I have two accounts and couldn't connect using either. While I like IGS, it isn't worth this hassle. The annoying thing is that I have some friends who are playing on the inter-city league (I forget the exact name) and I would like to be able to watch their games.

so it sounds like you're only having username/password issues then

maybe your can reset your password

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried it and no luck. Same "connecting..." message with a spinning thing that never actually connects.
